Did you know that children's books contain 50% more rare words than primetime television shows?

That means every time you curl up with a book and a child, you are giving them a vocabulary lesson they simply cannot get anywhere else. Reading together is one of the most powerful things a family can do, and it does not have to take long. Just a few pages a day can make a world of difference.

This summer, we encourage every family in Colquitt County to keep the books open! Visit your local library, dig out old favorites, and make reading part of your daily routine. πŸ’š

One book, lots of ways to read! Let's spend a few minutes with Salley discovering new ways to read some of your favorite children's books.

This week, we are reading and making sounds with a classic: The Very Hungry Caterpillar's ABC.

You may recognize Salley Edwards from our previous videos! Salley is an early childhood educator with more than 25 years of experience and the author of The Brilliance of Babies board book series. She also contributes content for the Rollins Center for Language and Literacy's free online platform and Cox Campus. A Moultrie local and proud CCEF board member, Salley brings her passion for early literacy to everything she does.

What a way to end the year! Cox Elementary School celebrated the incredible mentors who showed up week after week for their students this year. These relationships are at the heart of what the Colquitt County Educational Foundation believes in, one caring adult can change everything for a child.

To every mentor who gave their time, their encouragement, and their heart this school year, THANK YOU. You are making a difference that will last long after the school bell rings for the last time this summer. πŸ’š

We cannot wait to see even more mentors in classrooms across Colquitt County next year!

πŸ“Ί PBS recently aired an episode of Your Fantastic Mind that takes a beautiful, research-backed look at what it truly takes to become a reader.

The episode features the incredible work of the Atlanta Speech School and the Rollins Center for Language and Learning, including their Talk with Me Baby program β€” a hospital-based initiative so impactful it caught the attention of Harvard researchers.

This is exactly the kind of work the Colquitt County Educational Foundation believes in. Watch and share with every parent, educator, and community member you know.

𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐑𝐞 𝐂𝐂𝐄𝐅 𝐁𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝!

"SRTC is a partner organization of CCEF, which is how I originally became involved, but I've remained on the board because of the importance of this committee and the work we're doing to help those in our community. Reading is a critical element for the success of any person. We've been able to provide reading resources from birth through early literacy efforts, while also building a strong mentoring program with our community partners. The results we are seeing in our students' progress are very encouraging. The lasting effect is to help build a stronger future workforce for Colquitt County. The success of CCEF directly impacts everyone in Colquitt County. Supporting CCEF means investing in literacy, mentoring, innovation, and opportunity β€” efforts that benefit students today and the entire community for generations. It gives everyone a chance to thrive."

Leigh Wallace
Executive Vice President & Vice President for Student Affairs, Southern Regional Technical College
