Did you know roughly 1 in 6 children under age five in the United States receives a book from Dolly Parton's Imagination Library? ๐Ÿ“š

Since 1995, the program has gifted more than 332 million books to over 3 million children across five countries. A child enrolled from birth can build a home library of up to 60 books before starting kindergarten, each one addressed to them by name.

Here at home, the Colquitt County Educational Foundation is proud to help carry Dolly's legacy forward. Our local program reaches families throughout Colquitt County and parts of the surrounding counties. Families can also choose bilingual English/Spanish books, and braille and audiobook options are available for children who need them.

October is TeenToberโ„ข, a nationwide celebration hosted by libraries to celebrate teens and the programs that help them grow.

TeenTober shines a light on the many ways teen services help young people learn new skills, explore their interests, and fuel their passions both inside and outside the library. From reading and writing to technology, creativity, and beyond, it celebrates every kind of literacy.

CCEF believes teens deserve support all year long, not just one month out of the year. When our community invests in opportunities for teens, we help shape confident learners, future leaders, and a stronger Colquitt County.

This month, take a moment to cheer on the teens in your life and the libraries and educators who show up for them every day.

Meet Anne Swartzentruber, Secretary of the CCEF Board and a dedicated mentor!

"I grew up in a home filled with books, where my mother read aloud to all six of her children every day. From an early age, I discovered that the written word could transport me to places I might never see and introduce me to experiences and cultures I might never otherwise encounter.

Serving with the Literacy Foundation gives me the opportunity to help struggling readers become confident students and workers. Through our programs, we also equip parents of young children to nurture a lifelong love of books by reading aloud.

Literacy acts as the platform for community growth and well-being. When elementary literacy rates rise, communities can feel the effects for generations, improving everything from the local economy to public health.

Literacy is a powerful tool that changes lives, opens minds, and builds a better future. In the words of Dr. Seuss: 'The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.'"

September Mentor of the Month: Meg Bishop!

Please join us in celebrating Meg Bishop, our Mentor of the Month for September! Meg works with the Colquitt County School System, and though last year marked her very first year as a mentor, she's already making a lasting impact.

Meg mentors Keilah Lopez Velasquez, a 2nd grader. Meg shows up consistently, listens with patience, and reminds Keilah every week that she is valued and supported.

Your baby is already talking to you! ๐Ÿ‘ถ

Long before your little one says their first word, they're communicating through coos, looks, and reaches. Responding to those cues is called "serve and return," and it matters more than you might think.

Your baby coos. You talk back.
Your baby reaches for something. You name it.
Your baby looks at the dog. You say, "Yes! Dog! Look at his tail wag!"

Research shows that when parents respond promptly and meaningfully to a baby's cues around 9 months old, those babies go on to show stronger language skills months later. It's not about teaching words. It's about noticing what your baby is already "saying" and responding like it's a real conversation.

Dolly founded the Imagination Library in 1995 in honor of her father, who could not read or write. What began in her home county in East Tennessee has grown into the largest early childhood book-gifting program in the world. Together, Imagination Library programs help place books into the homesโ€”and heartsโ€”of millions of children around the world.
