Juneteenth is more than a day of remembrance—it's a call to action🖤❤️💚

Though the events in Prichard that were scheduled for today were postponed due to weather, nonetheless we still celebrate the strength of those who endured slavery, the courage of those who fought for liberation, and the generations who continued the struggle for civil rights and voting rights.

The right to vote was hard won and remains one of the most powerful tools we have to shape our communities and our future.

As we honor Juneteenth, let us recommit ourselves to protecting democracy, expanding civic participation, and ensuring every eligible voter has access to the ballot box.

If you’re celebrating outside today, be safe with the oncoming stormy weather. And remember:

Due to expected inclement weather, the Prichard Juneteenth Celebration activities scheduled for tomorrow, Friday, and Saturday that required volunteer support have been postponed.

We sincerely thank everyone who signed up to serve. Your willingness to show up for the community is deeply appreciated.

We will share updated dates as soon as they are announced and will follow up then to see who may be available to help.

Juneteenth Freedom Day Celebration Update

The City of Prichard advises participants and vendors of the following updates regarding the 2026 Juneteenth Freedom Day Celebration activities:

Due to forecasted inclement weather, all outdoor activities scheduled for Friday, June 19, 2026, at Chickasabogue Park have been postponed. The Freedom Day Parade scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2026, has also been postponed.

However, the Freedom Day Community Giveaway scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2026, inside A.J. Cooper Municipal Complex will continue as planned, beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Voice Season 29 winner, Alexia Jayy, will still perform starting at 1:30 p.m.

The City of Prichard appreciates understanding and support as we work to ensure a safe and meaningful celebration. Updated information regarding postponed activities will be announced later.

When people think about politics, they usually think about the President or Congress.

But some of the biggest decisions impacting Black communities happen much closer to home.

City councils help decide:
• Police funding priorities
• Housing and rent policies
• Public transportation
• Neighborhood investment

School boards influence:
• What students are taught
• School funding decisions
• Discipline policies
• Book bans and curriculum

County commissioners oversee:
• Public health services
• Local jails
• Voting administration
• Emergency funding and major budgets

And policies like zoning and preemption can shape:
• Affordable housing access
• Environmental conditions
• Community displacement
• Whether local governments can pass protections for their residents

The truth is: local politics shape our everyday lives.

Yet local elections are often decided by a small number of voters because many people are never taught how much power these offices actually hold.

Understanding local power is political education. And political education is community protection.

As local and runoff elections continue happening across the country this year, now is the time to learn who represents your city, county, and school district — and pay attention to the decisions being made in your community.

In 1957, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King traveled to Ghana to witness the country’s independence from British colonial rule.

As one flag came down and another was raised, King saw more than a ceremony. He saw an old order dying and a new future being born.

That moment still speaks to us today.

Here in America, the fight for freedom is not finished. Voting rights are being weakened, access to the ballot is being challenged, and many of the protections people marched, bled, and died for are still under attack. Recent voting rights reports continue to show new restrictive voting laws and ongoing concerns about the weakening of the Voting Rights Act.

But Ghana reminded King, and reminds us, that systems of oppression are not permanent.

When people organize, unite, and refuse to accept injustice as normal, something new can still be born.

An old order can pass away.
A new one can rise.

🚨 URGENT ALABAMA VOTER ALERT 🚨

If you vote with a provisional ballot in the June 16, 2026 Primary Runoff Election because you do not have the right ID, you will need to fix that issue by Thursday, June 18, 2026 at 5:00 PM or your vote may not count.

Because Friday, June 19, 2026 is the Juneteenth state holiday, voters will have less time than usual to take care of this.

✅ What you will need to do:
Take your ID to the Board of Registrars by 5:00 PM on Thursday, June 18, 2026. You should also provide your address and phone number.

⚠️ Do not wait until Friday.
⚠️ The deadline will be Thursday.
⚠️ Please share this so voters can be ready.

The Alabama Administrative Calendar says voters must provide identification for certain provisional ballots by Thursday, June 18, 2026 at 5:00 PM.

They may not be old enough to vote yet, but they understand what’s at stake.

These young Alabamians are reminding us that voting is not just about today. It is about the future we are building for the next generation.

When our children are organizing, speaking up, and encouraging adults to get to the polls, the least we can do is show up.

Vote for the future. Vote for our communities. Vote because they are watching.

They may not be old enough to vote, but their future is on the ballot. So a group of Alabama kids started an organization to activate the nonvoters in their families.
