๐ชถ Before South Dakota Had a Name, Indigenous Peoples Called This Land Home. ๐งก
Take a moment to think about that.
Long before our towns, roads, and communities existed as we know them today, Indigenous Nations were here. They had their own governments, languages, traditions, families, and ways of life.
And their stories are still being written. โค๏ธ
Today, on Indigenous Peoplesโ Day, we recognize and celebrate the strength, resilience, history, and contributions of Indigenous peoples.
But here's something worth rememberingโฆ
Indigenous people are not just part of our history. They are part of our present, our communities, and our future.
Here in South Dakota, Indigenous cultures and communities are all around us. Yet how often do we take the time to truly listen, learn, and understand their experiences?
At the Mitchell Area Inclusion Coalition (MAIC), we believe inclusion is more than simply welcoming people into a room. It's making sure their voices are heard, their identities are respected, and their stories matter.
We don't have to share the same experiences to learn from one another. But we do have to be willing to listen.
๐งก Today, we honor Indigenous peoples, recognize Tribal sovereignty, and reaffirm the importance of building relationships rooted in respect and understanding.
