Congratulations Sankara Eye Foundation India!

SEFI has been recognised by the Asia Book of Records for achieving a historic milestone — performing over 3 million free vision restoration surgeries since its inception.

This remarkable recognition reflects our unwavering commitment to eliminating curable blindness and providing quality eye care to those who need it the most. Together, we continue to restore sight, transform lives, and spread hope.

Progress in blindness elimination depends on more than treatment alone — it depends on coordination between public systems and community access.

Hon’ble Chief Minister of Bihar, Shri Samrat Choudhary, met with Shri Mritunjay Tiwary, Co-Founder & CEO, Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital, to discuss the organisation’s eye health initiatives and how stronger collaboration can support efforts towards national eye care standards.

Access to eye care remains inconsistent across many regions. Delayed screenings, distance from care, limited referrals, and shortage of trained professionals continue to impact timely treatment.

Last year, Akhand Jyoti supported over 180,000 eye surgeries, while strengthening outreach, workforce development, screenings, referrals, and follow-up care across underserved communities.

The way forward requires long-term coordination between public leadership and accessible eye care systems.

Join us in expanding access to timely eye care across Bihar. https://www.akhandjyoti.org/

Before surgery, Sankara’s nurses are there. After surgery, they remain by the patient’s side.

They guide patients through unfamiliar environments, offering reassurance, clear communication, and compassionate care.

For many, especially elderly patients, the hospital experience can feel overwhelming. Delayed access to care often adds to that anxiety.

Sankara’s nursing teams play a critical role in bridging this gap, helping patients feel informed, supported, and at ease throughout their journey.

As we expand our hospitals and increase access to care, their presence ensures that treatment remains not only effective, but also humane and patient-centered.

We recognize and thank our nurses for the care they provide both clinical and emotional.

Thank you for helping make quality eye care accessible and reassuring for all.

We call it sacrifice. But to her, it’s just love.

The first to wake up. Then cooking. Cleaning. Caring. The last to eat. The last to sleep.

Remembering everyone’s needs before her own. Noticing what no one else does. She doesn’t keep count. She’s just there for all. Every single day.

And even when her vision begins to fade, she adjusts quietly. Sometimes because access is far. Sometimes because care feels unaffordable. Often because someone else’s needs come first.

Across India, millions of mothers live with cataracts. The scale is hard to imagine and growing every year. The need is vast. The backlog is real. Not because treatment doesn’t exist. But because access hasn’t kept pace.

That’s why Sankara Eye Foundation USA is building more hospitals and expanding capacity at scale so care reaches those who need it, when they need it.

So mothers don’t have to choose between caring for others and caring for themselves.

This Mother’s Day, let’s honor her in a way she never would ask for.

$50 can help restore sight for someone like her. Give the gift of vision.

For many daily wage workers, vision is essential to earning a livelihood.

When cataracts develop, the impact is immediate: reduced productivity, loss of income, and increased dependence.

Despite this, many continue working with impaired vision due to limited access to care, distance to healthcare facilities, and the inability to forgo daily wages.

While cataract surgery is a routine and effective procedure, access remains a significant barrier for underserved communities.

Sankara Eye Foundation USA addresses this gap by expanding hospital capacity and improving access to free quality eye care at scale.

By restoring sight, individuals are able to return to work, regain independence, and support their families.

This Labour Day, support efforts to make quality eye care accessible to those who need it most.

💛 Help restore sight. Restore independence.

The Siliguri Greater Lions Eye Hospital in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, is undergoing a transformation. An existing four-storey facility spread over 2.18 acres in Kartoa is being expanded: two additional floors, seven new operating theatres, and a total footprint of 140,000 square feet designed for high-volume, high-quality care.

When construction is complete, the hospital's annual free surgery capacity will increase from 15,000 to 40,000. Free beds will triple from 100 to 300. Nine operating theatres will run procedures across cataract, cornea, glaucoma, retina, and paediatric ophthalmology.

The population it will serve: over 20 million people in one of India's most under-served regions.

This is what infrastructure actually looks like: not a camp, not a temporary clinic, but a permanent institution built to outlast every individual donor's gift and keep treating patients for decades.

Your $50 contributes to this. To the building. To the beds. To the 40,000 people a year who will receive free surgery inside it.

India’s Elderly Population Is Growing 3x Faster Than the Country Itself.

India is ageing fast. The 60-and-above population is expanding at three times the rate of the overall population and cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in that age group.

Every year that passes without adequate infrastructure means the backlog doesn’t stay the same. It grows.

These are not just statistics. These are grandmothers who can no longer see the faces of the children they raised. Farmers who can no longer work their land.

Elders who have been told by silence and by distance, that their sight doesn’t matter enough to fix.

Sankara Eye Foundation USA is building hospitals so that the surge in elderly blindness meets a system ready to treat it.

A $50 donation funds one surgery. A hospital funds generations.
