Help the osprey by protecting the Atlantic menhaden population. Please take a moment to submit your comment to the Atlantic State Marine Fisheries Commission. See the American Littoral Society's post below for the email address and wording. In advance, thank you for your help in this critical matter!

TODAY IS THE LAST DAY TO COMMENT ON BETTER MENHADEN MANAGEMENT!
Striped bass, ospreys, tuna and whales all eat menhaden. This November, fisheries managers will decide how many can be caught along the entire Atlantic coast. That catch limit, called the TAC, is a major decision for our coastal food web, particularly when there is evidence there are not enough menhaden being left.
Our ask: cut the coastwide catch limit by at least 40%, starting in 2027, and leave more food in the water. For fishing. For the ecosystem. For ospreys. For our fisheries that rely on menhaden (like striped bass and tuna).

As part of our 2026 Tuesday on the Fly theme, The Messy Side of Conservation and Sustainability, CU Maurice River visited PSEG’s Energy & Environmental Resource Center to explore the connections between energy production and environmental stewardship.

Our day included a presentation on nuclear energy, a closer look at PSEG’s Estuary Enhancement Program, a visit to the cooling tower, and a brief stop at the Hancock’s House estuary site to learn about habitat restoration.

From meeting energy needs to restoring valuable habitats, we gained a better understanding of the complex challenges and environmental considerations that shape conservation work behind the scenes.

A big thank you to PSEG for welcoming us and sharing their expertise!

A huge thank you to everyone who came out to lend a hand for the 34th Annual Cumberland County Waterways Cleanup, sponsored by the Cumberland County Clean Communities Program!

Our volunteers rolled up their sleeves and got to work at three locations in Millville, collecting 33 bags of trash, along with a variety of larger items, including 4 tires, a shopping cart, a vacuum, and a toilet.

While it might not be the most glamorous work, cleanups like these make a real difference. Removing litter helps keep trash and pollutants out of our waterways, protects wildlife from harmful debris, and supports the water quality and ecological health of the Maurice River and the communities that depend on it.

Thank you to all our dedicated volunteers and partners who helped make this cleanup a success. We’re grateful for everyone who gives their time and energy to care for our local waterways.

CALL TO ACTION. Make your comment today! The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission is deciding the future of Atlantic menhaden—one of the most important forage fish in our waters. Your voice can help protect them.

The Wild and Scenic Maurice River ecosystem relies on the availibility of these fish. Right now, our local osprey populations are facing unprecedented nesting failures and starving chicks. Intensive industrial overfishing in the Chesapeake Bay is creating an ecological vacuum.

Please submit your public comment TODAY requiring more stringent protections:

👉 YES on Section 3.1 - Option B4 to demand the maximum 50% reduction in the industrial harvest cap.

👉 YES on Section 3.2.1 - Option B1 or B2 to establish strict seasonal quota periods that stop fleets from scooping up all the fish at once during critical spring and summer nesting seasons.

👉 YES on Section 3.2.2 - Option B to ensure strict overage paybacks so rules are actually enforced.
