This is not the update we wanted to share today.
Despite round-the-clock care, supportive treatment and the incredible outpouring of love, prayers and positive thoughts from this community, the sweet baby kitten we took in last night did not make it.
To say we are heartbroken would be an understatement.
We are sad.
We are exhausted.
And honestly, we are angry.
Not because rescue is hard. We signed up for that.
We are angry because innocent animals continue to fall through the cracks of a broken system.
Yesterday, a citizen did everything right. They found a critically ill kitten and sought help. What followed was a heartbreaking chain of events that ultimately left a tiny life dependent on volunteers and a small nonprofit with limited resources.
No animal should become collateral damage because there is no clear safety net.
The animals deserve better.
The citizens trying to help deserve better.
Our community deserves better.
Village Trappers will continue doing everything we can to help, but days like yesterday are a harsh reminder that rescues cannot be the only answer to a growing community crisis.
Yesterday alone brought us two critically ill kittens on top of the dozen cats and kittens already in our care.
Today we are allowing ourselves a moment to grieve. A moment to mourn a life that mattered. A life that was loved, even if only for a short time.
Then we will pick ourselves up and keep going. Because the others still need us.
And thankfully, there is a small bright spot to share.
The second kitten we took in yesterday, now affectionately named Popcorn, is showing signs of improvement. Popcorn was found in a local park in Vineland suffering from a severe upper respiratory infection with both eyes completely covered in discharge. Today, he was up hopping around his crate, reminding us why we keep fighting.
We'll take that win.
We want to thank every person who prayed, donated, shared our posts, sent supplies and offered words of encouragement. Your support means more than you know on days like today.
If you would like to help us continue caring for the most vulnerable cats and kittens in our community, please consider donating using the link below. We have also launched two new fundraising initiatives that will help us continue saying "yes" when there is nowhere else for these animals to turn.
Run free, sweet baby. You mattered. 💔
