Here’s my final post for the spring cleanup. Yesterday was a great success due to all the volunteers who came out to make a difference. Milan is so much cleaner today than it was on Friday.

Thank you to everyone who participated in some form. Special thanks to my special friends who help me organize this event every year.
-Rob Friese for the incredible pork and ribs
-Joe Ringbloom for the donation for food
-Denise Kolar, Traci Cole and Penny LeBlanc for running home base from start to finish
-George Elder for brisket donation
-Matt Tomecek and Marty Ritchie for always managing the biggest groups of volunteers
-Carrie Ritchie for the incredible sweet treats
-Toby Carver and Matt Perales for cleanup Saturday and bag pickup Sunday.
-Newt and Linda Squires for always being our biggest supporters

Sorry if I missed anyone. I’m very appreciative of everyone who comes out to help. Milan’s city council is always well represented. School board and library board also stepped up for the community. Milan’s football team was working hard, as well as our local Cub Scout troop and Easy Riders 4-H club. Milan Crossfit continues to work hard on Carpenter Road and it’s much appreciated.

Overall great community work session that needs to be carried out twice a year. For anyone truly wanting to overachieve, those bags are full of returnable deposit cans and recyclables. Anyone wanting the cans for fundraising are welcome to go through the bags before they enter the dumpster. Denise and I, more than once, have recycled every glass and plastic container picked up and returned hundreds of dollars in deposit cans. It’s a big job, and I’m not ready for this one lol. Who’s next??

Fall cleanup will be here in less than six months, so please consider another Saturday in the near future for supporting your home community of Milan.

Thank you Milan!

Thank you all for a great day. Weather was a menace, but hard workers won the day. Pics will be posted tomorrow after we pick up the day’s treasures.

Saturday April 18th. It’s 7:00 AM and we have rain until 11:00 AM. Potentially it might linger until 11:30. Pulled pork, brisket, ribs and mac and cheese are cooking so the party must go on. Pizza also on the menu.
Worst case scenario is we start around 11:30. We’ll keep lunch at 1:00 since we probably will not get as much picked up as on a sunny dry fall day. It happens, so stay the course and we’ll still have a very productive 11:30-1:00 community event.

Thanks again. Wear boots!!

Hartland cares. Brighton cares. Whitmore Lake cares. While driving home from up north last weekend I was pleasantly surprised to see all the road cleanup work that had happened. These three areas did a massive cleanup on their US 23 highway spaces. Milan has not attempted our own US 23 cleanup, but one day we should.

Spring in Michigan means rain is always a possibility. Saturday, from 11-1, looks like it should be ok. The grass will be wet and the deep ditches will be full. We may not be able to get every area we’d like picked up, but we can all do our best with what Mother Nature has given us.

Sometimes we have to get dirty to make Milan cleaner. Unless the forcast gets considerably worse we plan on meeting and cleaning. Lunch is still privided after the cleanup. No need to register. Please show up to 334 County St around 10:45 and we’ll get organized to send teams out for deployment.

Looking forward to a great day and seeing all of our amazing volunteers.

Ed

Friendly reminder to put April 18th on your calendar. Our spring clean is Saturday April 18 from 11:00 Am to 1:00 PM. No sign up necessary. Come to 334 County St to meet up with all of our volunteers and you'll be assigned a team and an area, and we go do our thing. Lunch provided at 1:00 after the volunteers return hungry.

Is Milan Cares really necessary? We feel it is. The two pics attached are what can accumulate in 4-5 months in a very small area. A one-mile stretch of Sanford Road, between Plank and Milan-Oakville Road gets abused by a small number of people. A wonderful volunteer (Becky W) and I cleaned this road last October 2025. This is what we've picked up since then. There were the normal water bottles and fast food also, but the liquor bottles were the majority. This unfortunate reality happens all around the perimeter of the City of Milan.

The group, Milan Cares, is the only team out there who attempts to keep Milan as clean as possible. If we didn't, we would look as bad as the State of Ohio in the 1970s. You have to be over 50 to remember how bad Ohio used to look with trash everywhere. Ohio has improved tremendously since the 1970s. If we don't stay vigilant in our community, we WILL live in a trash filled town. Milan Cares wants Milan to be a leader in quality of life, and we work two times a year to make sure our residents live in a clean environment.

Please join our team to keep Milan clean and inviting. Two hours of community service does a lot for the quality of life in the 48160.
