Upcoming community event!

Please join us for the First Annual Washtenaw County Pride Celebration, hosted by the Washtenaw County Racial Equity Office. This celebration brings our community together to honor Washtenaw County’s LGBTQ+ residents, employees, families, and allies and to reaffirm our commitment to building a county where everyone feels welcomed, valued, and supported.

The ceremony will feature remarks from Washtenaw County Board Chair Katie Scott, poetry from LGBTQ+ youth, a keynote address from Jim Toy Community Center Executive Director Joe Halsch, and the raising of the Pride Flag at the County Administration Building.

In the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, police raided (again) the Stonewall Inn, a local bar in NYC that was a popular hangout for LGBTQ+ folks. This time, exhausted by the repeated harassment, the patrons and others in the neighborhood resisted, setting off what would become five days of riots and protests.
One year later, a parade was organized to remember the riots and to honor the LGBTQ+ community publicly in a society that wanted to keep them in the shadows. Today marks the 57th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprisings, and the 56th anniversary of Pride.
To all the members of the LGBTIA+ community in and around Milan, their friends, families, and allies: We see you. We support you. We will fight for you. We love you and are so happy you are here!

On this day ten years ago, President Barack Obama officially designated the Stonewall Inn and the surrounding area in Greenwich Village, New York, as the Stonewall National Monument.

Before the 1960s, almost everything about living authentically as a le***an, a bisexual person or a gay man was illegal. The Stonewall Uprising on June 28, 1969 is a milestone in the quest for civil rights and provided momentum for a movement.
