Stomach Cancer Awareness Month is two weeks away, and the Annual No Stomach For Cancer Walk happens wherever you are.

Patients, caregivers, and advocates around the world organize their own walks and runs in November — in honor of someone still fighting, in memory of someone they lost. A lap around the neighborhood, a 5K with coworkers, or a morning at the park with family. There's no wrong way to do it.

Together, these events make up our largest fundraiser of the year, funding the research and support programs that reach people facing stomach cancer worldwide.

Amy Toner has spent her career advocating for patients as a Physician Assistant in general surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center. As one of our newest board members, she's bringing that same advocacy somewhere much more personal.

After learning at a young age that her family carries the CDH1 genetic mutation, Amy knew she might one day face the decision to undergo a prophylactic total gastrectomy - becoming a "seahorse." In June 2020, she did exactly that.

Amy brings both clinical expertise and firsthand experience with genetic cancer risk, major surgery, and life without a stomach. That combination shapes her advocacy for patient-centered care, early detection, and continued research into hereditary diffuse gastric cancer.

After years of dedicated service, Jon Florin has resigned as Executive Director to pursue a new opportunity.

While this change is hard, our mission remains unchanged.

The Board's Executive Committee is leading day-to-day operations during this transition, and we have begun a thoughtful search for the organization's next Executive Director.

Meet Trish Kempkes, one of our newest board members.

Trish carries the CDH1 genetic mutation associated with Hereditary Diffuse Gastric Cancer and was diagnosed with Stage 1 gastric cancer in 2025. She underwent a total gastrectomy shortly after, an experience that shaped her understanding of what patients and families face at every step - genetic testing, diagnosis, treatment, and life after "TG."

She brings executive leadership experience and communications expertise to our board, but it's her lived experience that drives her passion for advocacy. Trish believes sharing personal stories can inspire action, foster connection, and save lives.
