Teff is the smallest grain in the world.

Each seed is about the size of a poppy seed. Too small to be milled and separated the way wheat or rice can be.

Because of that, teff is always eaten as a whole grain, so nothing gets stripped away in processing.

It's also where injera comes from, the sour flatbread underneath nearly every meal in Ethiopia.

Teff is harvested this time of year, right alongside the maize, sorghum, and beans of Meher season.

Have a donor-advised fund? This is for you.

’s fall deadline is Thursday, October 8.

If Roots Ethiopia is already part of your giving plans, make your DAF grant now and give your gift a shot at being matched dollar for dollar.

We’ve seen work firsthand. Last year, two Roots Ethiopia board members participated and won matching funds.

Here’s what you need to do:

Make a DAF grant of more than $250 to Roots Ethiopia.

Then, take a moment and do these 2 important steps:
1. Save your grant confirmation. A downloaded confirmation or screenshot from your DAF account works.

2. Submit your confirmation to and pledge to grant at least half of your DAF by October 8.

That last step matters.

We want you to know that sending your charitable grant to Roots Ethiopia does NOT automatically enter your gift in . You need to submit your grant confirmation to too.

It’s easy. We promise.

If your Roots Ethiopia grant is selected, will match it dollar for dollar, up to $5,000.

New wheels for the team.

Before this, walking was the plan. Or catching a bus. Or paying for a ride on someone else's motorcycle.

This might be one of the most needed upgrades the team has ever had.

This season is called Meher.

It's Ethiopia's main harvest season, running roughly October through January, fed by the heavy rains of June through September.

It's the bigger of two growing seasons families here depend on. The other is Belg, a lighter rainy season earlier in the year.

Together, they're what a household is counting on to make it through to the next harvest.

When Meher goes well, families eat easier. When the rains fall short, so does the harvest.

For two years in a row, zero 8th graders at Meskel Chora School passed Ethiopia's 8th grade national exam. Families in this small village in rural Kembata were told their school might close.

This spring, six teachers led 10 Saturdays of extra tutoring in English, math, science, social science, and civics. Every 8th grader at Meskel Chora attended.

This year, 100% of them passed. 🤯

"For the past two years, no student in our school passed the exam… we attended every class, studied hard, and practiced past exam questions with our teachers. Now we have passed the exam. I am very happy." Nebrat, 8th grade

$26 here. $10 there. $260, enough for 10 students.

So many of you pictured the same thing: a student walking to school on the first day in safe, comfortable shoes.

And it all added up. This month our Ethiopian team is fitting 259 students (and counting) in rural Ethiopia with new shoes and socks.

However you showed up for ShoeTember, thank you. 🙏

Roots Ethiopia is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit in the United States and a registered NGO in Ethiopia.

That second registration means Ethiopia has given us permission to work there. Along with that permission comes a set of rules for how organizations like ours are allowed to operate, and following them closely is something we take seriously.

Being a registered NGO is part of the trust that makes our work possible in Ethiopia.
