Please keep this family in your thoughts and prayers❤️
Imagine being the parent walking beside your child for the last time, while hundreds of people stand silently along a hospital hallway knowing the organs inside your son are about to give other people a chance to LIVE.
That was the heartbreaking scene in Youngstown as 14-year-old Luke Durst was taken on his Honor Walk.
Amanda reached out to me about this Ohio freshman whose life changed in an instant after a four-wheeler accident Sunday.
Luke suffered a skull fracture and devastating brain injuries while riding with his dad.
He remained on life support as his family faced the news no parent is ever prepared to hear: their son would not recover.
Luke passed away yesterday.
But before saying goodbye, his family made a decision that allowed something beautiful to emerge from an absolutely devastating loss.
They donated his organs.
People who attended Luke’s Honor Walk say approximately 200 family members, friends, classmates, teammates, teachers and hospital workers lined the halls in silence.
For nearly 20 minutes, they waited.
Then Luke came down the hallway.
Erica, whose children attend Luke’s school, described watching teenagers hug, pray and sob as their 14-year-old classmate passed them on his final journey.
She says the family was told Luke’s organs would save SIX lives.
Think about that for a moment.
One family is now facing birthdays, holidays, soccer games and an entire lifetime without their son and brother.
At the same time, other families may be receiving the call they have desperately waited for because of the gift Luke left behind.
There is no way to make those two realities equal. One family’s extraordinary generosity does not make losing Luke hurt any less.
But it does mean that after this 14-year-old’s heart stopped beating, parts of him could keep giving others more tomorrows.
Please help with heartfelt prayers and condolences.
And leave his family some words they can carry with them.
Rest peacefully, Luke. 💚🙏
