Unaccompanied kids need experienced legal service providers by their side.

So many of these children fled violence, trafficking, neglect and/or abuse in search of safety.
In the immigration legal system, there is no guaranteed right to a legal representative before the immigration court.
That means that even children, no matter their age, could be required to represent themselves alone before a judge if they cannot afford an immigration lawyer or if there is no free legal service provider, such as Americans for Immigrant Justice, that can step forward.

These local jails were supposed to detain immigrants for only 72 hours -- yet a woman was held for a total of 26 days.

⛓️ A French Moroccan with a pending green card application was held in local jail for more than four weeks. This was done through repeat rebookings at the Pinellas County jail.

🔒 ProPublica explains: "The repeat rebookings stem from the fact that [there isn't] enough detention space to jail all the immigrants whom ICE and its cooperating local authorities are rounding up."

Paul Chavez, Director of Litigation and Advocacy for Americans for Immigrant Justice, was featured in the article.

📢 He states: “If it was that easy to thwart, all we would have to do to thwart the Fourth Amendment was throw somebody in the backseat of a car, drive them to McDonald’s and then drive back,” Chavez said. “I don’t know that the drafters of the Fourth Amendment would have found solace in that.”

⚖️ Americans for Immigrant Justice is the only statewide immigrant defense nonprofit that provides free legal services to low-income people in all immigration detention facilities in Florida. Your donation helps immigrants seek the protection they need.
