On may 21st, 2026, St. Brendan High School students had an incredible opportunity to explore the Alexander Orr Water Treatment Plant (6800 SW 87th Ave, Miami, FL) through an engaging and educational tour hosted by Miami-Dade County Water & Sewer Department (WASD).

The day kicked off with an interactive panel discussion with senior engineers featuring a design engineer, planner, and construction engineer, giving students a well-rounded perspective on careers in the water industry. The session encouraged curiosity and participation—students asked thoughtful questions and gained valuable insights into how infrastructure projects are planned, designed, and built.
Following the panel, chief treatment plant operator, Pablo Villafan, provided a comprehensive overview of the facility and its critical role in safeguarding public health and supporting the community. Students then witnessed the treatment process firsthand, as a technician conducted a live filter backwash demonstration bringing classroom science to life.
The group also toured the operations control room and the laboratory facilities, offering a behind-the-scenes look at how the plant is monitored and managed on a daily basis.
To wrap up the experience, students enjoyed lunch generously sponsored by the ASCE Miami-Dade Branch Outreach Committee.
A special thank you to Rebeka Flores from WASD for organizing such a comprehensive, interactive, and impactful tour—helping inspire and educate the next generation of engineers and community leaders.
