Agency Spotlight and 2026 Event Speaker: Children's Therapy and Early Education School.

About Us: The Children's Therapy and Early Education School is a nonprofit preschool serving children ages 3-5 with developmental delays and special needs. Our team provides individualized instruction along with speech, occupational, and physical therapy in a nurturing, inclusive environment.
How United Way Funding Is Used: United Way funding helps offset the cost of classroom instruction, specialized educational materials, therapy support, and daily operations during the summer session, allowing us to provide high-quality services regardless of a family's ability to pay. Your support directly impacts the children we serve by helping them build communication, mobility, independence, and school readiness skills.
We are so grateful for United Way's support. Your investment helps us provide high-quality early childhood special education and therapy services to children with developmental disabilities in our community. Thank you for believing in our mission and the children and families we serve.

Agency Spotlight: The Laura Miller George Help Center

The Audrain County Human Development Corporation was organized in 1965 by a group of Mexico residents in an effort to coordinate services to the families of Audrain County living in poverty. For many years this organization was a small food pantry and a thrift store located on East Breckenridge St. in Mexico. In 2009 the Board of Directors changed the name to The Help Center, Inc. and in late 2013 & 2014 they began the process of planning for growth and expansion. They began to work on plans for growth and Alan & Susan Atkins donated a parcel of land at 403 Fairground in Mexico and with financial donations, they purchased additional adjoining land, a total of 7 acres including the address of 409 Fairground, which is now the address of The Help Center. Planning and fundraising began in earnest and with the tremendous support of the Mexico MO community, grants from charitable foundations, a NAP tax credit and the endless support of Mr. Dudley Miller, they began construction of a new building, which was completed and opened in June of 2015. The new building was named "The Laura Miller George Help Center", in honor of Dudley Miller's mother, Mrs. Laura Mae Miller. She spent her life helping others and we honored to serve others under her namesake. The original portion of the building was 15,000 Sq. Ft. and housed the much-enhanced food pantry and thrift store. In 2017 the board of directors recognized the need for growth of the thrift store portion of our non-profit business and by May of 2018 had added on 7000 Sq. Ft to the back of the building for a thrift store warehouse. We are now a 22.000 Sq. Ft. facility and utilize every square foot to better serve those in need.

The Thrift Store continues to be at the core of our non-profit business as our major source of funding.

Our primary mission is to help eliminate hunger in our community by providing supplemental food assistance to our food insecure neighbors. As an agency of The Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri, we give all our supplemental food to our families. We strive to raise awareness of hunger and poverty while working toward solutions to eliminate them. Our services include:

The Food Pantry: Monthly supplemental food assistance and emergency food

The Thrift Store: Selling used clothing and household items as well as donating these same type items in times of need

Prescription Assistance: Provide limited and emergency drug prescription purchases

Emergency Assistance: Limited short-term assistance and coordination with other agencies

Mentoring: An effort to help break the cycle of poverty

Agency Spotlight: St Joseph Early Learning Center

The St. Joseph Early Learning Center is called by its Catholic Parish Community to assist the parents of our community in the development and care of their children. We accept children 6 weeks through 5 years old and are open Monday through Friday from 6:30 am until 5:30 pm. We implement a program to enhance children's religious, social, emotional, and physical development and provide a safe, fun, loving atmosphere where children can grow and discover that people and the world are gifts from God. The funds received from the United Way are used to pay our monthly cost for our curriculum program throughout the year, supplies to help support the curriculum, yearly staff CPR training, and a field trip each year.

Agency Spotlight: Uplift Mid-MO
Uplift Mid-MO is a faith-based nonprofit organization serving Audrain County by walking
alongside individuals and families during difficult seasons of life. We serve as a gap service,
helping meet needs that may not be fully addressed by traditional assistance programs. Rooted
in our faith, we believe lasting change happens through relationships. We intentionally build
meaningful connections where people feel seen, heard, and supported, helping our neighbors
navigate challenges, connect to resources, and move toward greater stability and hope.
Through one-on-one mentorship, financial education, resource navigation and direct support,
we seek to empower individuals and families rather than simply provide a temporary fix. As we
continue to grow, Uplift is expanding its focus on initiatives that address the root causes of
poverty and create pathways toward long-term transformation.
How United Way Funds Are Used
Funding from the United Way of Audrain County helps Uplift provide direct assistance to
individuals and families facing hardship. These funds support needs such as rent, utility
assistance and other barriers that threaten family stability. United Way's partnership also allows
us to strengthen mentorship opportunities, provide educational resources, and invest in new
initiatives that encourage long-term self-sufficiency and community transformation.
