Hi folks, We need more of our non-plastic, biodegradable oyster restoration rings to deploy this summer, so we will be hosting 2 workshops on UCF main campus to make more. Dates are July 2 and 3 and the time each day is 8 AM -11 AM. Must be 18+ to participate. The work is both messy and fun. 🌧️ Brevard County gets 80% of its annual rainfall in summer, meaning any fertilizer on your lawn is likely to be washed away, not feeding your plants, but feeding harmful algae in the Lagoon instead.

🚫 That’s why there’s a fertilizer ban from June 1 to Sept 30 in Brevard County. And if you live near water, there’s a year-round 15-foot fertilizer-free zone along the shoreline.

🐟 Heavy rain can wash excess nutrients into our waterways, fueling algae blooms and harming fish, dolphins, manatees, and other wildlife.
The good news? Your lawn usually doesn't need fertilizer during the rainy season. Instead, mow high, mulch grass clippings, water only when needed, and keep yard waste out of the street.

💙 Every yard connects to the Lagoon. Small actions at home make a big difference for clean water and a healthier future.

🌿 Did you know that something as simple as grass clippings and leaves can seriously harm the Indian River Lagoon?

💧 When yard waste is left on streets or swept into storm drains, rain carries it directly into the lagoon. This extra organic material releases nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, which fuel harmful algal blooms. These blooms block sunlight, deplete oxygen, and damage vital habitats like seagrass beds – threatening the wildlife that depends on them, including manatees and fish.

Here’s how YOU can help protect our lagoon:
✅ Bag or mulch grass clippings and leaves instead of blowing them into streets.
✅ Contain yard waste properly for pickup.
✅ Maintain a buffer zone of native plants along waterways to filter runoff.
✅ Never dump yard debris near storm drains or waterways.

Small actions at home make a BIG difference for our lagoon’s health. Let’s work together to keep the Indian River Lagoon clean, vibrant, and full of life! 💙🌱
