Were the days of creation really 24 hours?

If Genesis says Yehoveh created the heavens and the earth “in the beginning,” does that necessarily mean they were created during the six days that follow?

Genesis 1:1 comes before the first day is introduced, and that distinction raises an interesting question about how we understand the creation account.

And what about the familiar statement that “a day is as a thousand years”? Does that mean the creation days could represent thousands of years?

In our latest Mid-Form from Genesis Lesson 2, Tom Bradford walks through the text and examines the relationship between Genesis 1:1, the six days of creation, and the question of the age of the earth.

This is one of those passages where slowing down and reading the actual words can change the conversation.

How could there be light on the first day of creation if the sun wasn’t created until day four?

At first glance, Genesis 1 seems to present a contradiction.

But when we look at the Hebrew words being used, we find something worth slowing down for.

In Genesis 1:3-4, the word for light is or, referring to illumination.

When Genesis later describes the sun, moon, and other lights in the sky, it uses me’orot, referring to light-giving objects.

So what was the light of day one?

Tom Bradford explores the possibility that this first light came from God Himself, and connects it with the light described in Revelation 21-22.

He also makes an important distinction between what the text clearly says and what remains speculation.

When we look at Yeshua’s example, we see Him keeping Shabbat, teaching on it, worshiping on it, healing on it, and doing good on it.

He challenged manmade burdens, but He did not treat God’s Sabbath as something to discard.

“So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God.”

What does it actually mean that we are made in the image of God?

Genesis tells us that humanity was created uniquely among all of Yehoveh’s creatures. We are not Yehoveh, nor do we possess all of His attributes, but we have been given certain attributes that reflect Him.

And there is something else that sets humanity apart: we have a spirit, giving us the capacity to know and commune with the living God.

So what does it mean to be made in His image?
