Something we have been pondering from Exodus this week:

Why does God tell us to remember Shabbat?

Not simply observe it.
Not simply keep it.
Remember it.

Because we forget.

We forget what Yehoveh has done. We forget who provided. We forget that we were once slaves and that He brought us out. We forget that we are not meant to live as though everything depends on our own work and striving.

Exodus 16 gives us such a beautiful picture of this. Yehoveh provided manna for Israel and gave them specific instructions for the sixth day so they could stop gathering on Shabbat. And yet, some still went out looking for it.

They had already experienced His provision, but they still had to learn to trust Him enough to stop.

And maybe we are not so different.

We can know what Yehoveh has done for us and still forget.

We can spend six days working, planning, producing, managing, and carrying everything, then struggle to actually put it down.

So maybe the command to remember Shabbat is also an invitation to remember:

Remember who brought you out.
Remember who provides.
Remember that you are not a slave.
Remember that you can stop.
Remember that your Father is still God when you are not working.

So as Shabbat begins, we want to sit with this question:

What am I in danger of forgetting?
