Who’s lurking in the creek after dark? As the moonlight dances across the water and shadows stretch along the creek's edge, a pair of eyes glimmers just above the surface. A ripple breaks the silence… then SPLASH! No need to be spooked... it might just be a river otter on the hunt for its next meal! 🌙🐟

With their whiskered faces and stealthy swimming skills, river otters might just be the perfect Halloween critters. But these playful creatures are more treat than trick! River otters depend on healthy waterways and natural habitats to thrive. This Halloween, French Creek Valley Conservancy is celebrating the animals that make our watershed so special and reminding everyone that protecting our landscapes and waterways helps wildlife flourish. 🍂 Leave the Leaves! 🍁🌿Fallen leaves are more than just autumn cleanup... they’re an essential part of a healthy ecosystem! 🍂

As leaves break down, they return valuable nutrients to the soil, help retain moisture, protect plant roots, and provide shelter for beneficial insects, pollinators, and other wildlife through the winter. 🐝🦋🐛

Instead of bagging every leaf, consider leaving them in garden beds, under trees and shrubs, or in a designated natural area. You can also mulch leaves into your lawn to return nutrients to the soil. Leave the leaves and give wildlife a helping hand! 🍁

50 More Acres Protected!🌳🍂🎉

We’re excited to announce the addition of 50 acres to French Creek Valley Conservancy’s protected lands! With this addition, FCVC has now protected a total of 3,654 acres. This beautiful property will be conserved and protected for the benefit of our community, wildlife, and future generations.

While this property is not yet open to the public, keep an eye out for details in the future!

A big thank you to Ryan Glazier from the Pennsylvania Game Commission-Northwest Region for sharing his knowledge and expertise on local wildlife! 🦆🌿

From black bears and snowshoe hares to waterfowl and wild turkeys, everyone learned about the research, conservation, and management techniques used to support our local wildlife. Attendees even got an up-close look at a bear trap and a turkey rocket net! 🐻🦃

Keep moving all year long! Join us for a "Move"mber Walk at FCVC's Mammoth Run on Saturday, November 14th, 2026, from 10 AM to 12 PM.🍂 This FCVC property is located on the east side of Conneaut Lake, PA off Ellion Road (41°36'49.8"N 80°16'38.0"W). The property has been a project site for an improved trail with a newly constructed boardwalk! The loop is just about a mile. Learn about the property's history and why it was protected!

Meet the FCVC Board!🌱💧 Our Board of Directors provides leadership, guidance, and vision to help advance the Conservancy's mission. Travis Fox is our board Treasurer. Here's a note from him...

"French Creek is a true community treasure—sustained by our shared stewardship and worthy of lasting protection. I am fortunate to own property next to the creek. My goal is to help conserve and protect it so my children and grandchildren can enjoy it for years to come!"

Travis can be found at the French Creek Watershed Cleanup helping to unload and sort the THOUSANDS of pounds trash that is brought in by hundreds of volunteers. He enjoys spending time outside with his family and hopes that they learn to love the French Creek watershed as much as he does.

FALL TAP TALK!🍂🍁 On Wednesday, October 21st at 6 pm, join FCVC at Poverty K**b Farmhouse Ales Event Barn just outside of Mill Village, PA for our fall Tap Talk. 🍺🌱

Listen and learn from a Pennsylvania Game Commission-Northwest Region wildlife biologist about some of the exciting wildlife management projects happening right here in northwestern Pennsylvania. From black bear research to waterfowl banding, you’ll get a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the work being done to study and protect our state’s wildlife. Bring your curiosity and your questions because there’s always something wild happening!

A big thank you to Richard Gosnell for leading us in our Dark Sky Event at Scarlett Springs Run Conservation Area! We had a clear night full of stars last Friday.✨🌕

Starting at dusk, we saw how nature changes from day to night. Richard walked us through the changes you can see in wildlife as night approaches. As the first stars appeared, he shared some of their names and tricks to finding the constellations. By the end of the program, we were covered by a blanket of stars!

Hunting Season Safety Reminder🍂

As hunting season gets underway in the French Creek watershed, we’re reminding everyone to stay safe and be seen while enjoying FCVC properties this fall. Many of our conserved lands are open to public access and may also be used for hunting in accordance with Pennsylvania Game Commission regulations.

If you’re hiking, birdwatching, walking your dog, or simply taking in the fall colors, please:
✅ Wear blaze orange — a hat, vest, or both
✅ Keep pets leashed and visible
✅ Be aware of local hunting seasons and schedules
✅ Stay alert and use extra caution while exploring

Let’s share the outdoors responsibly and enjoy the beauty of fall safely together! 🍁🦌
