On July 12, NWPWA held a woods walk on the topic of The Forest/Stream Interface. We explored the work that's been done to improve the flow of the Woodcock Creek, just below the dam. The creek eventually flows into the French Creek. Contouring the shoreline, armoring the bank, and improving the foliage (riparian buffer) were there for us to observe and understand.

On March 15,2025, the NWPWA held its annual Spring meeting at the Pogue Student Center at Penn-West Edinboro University. About 85 people attended. We heard presentations by Dr. Kelly Pearce, Assistant Professor of Environmental Science at Allegheny College, on the wildlife research she and her team have been conducting in NW PA. Dr. Pearce noted that many animals rely on private land and land trusts to survive. Her research indicates that active forestry appears to be better for wildlife.

Katie Brozell from the PA Game Commission talked about raptors in NW PA. Katie explained how she has raised and trained Athena, a red-tailed hawk and how land owners should be preserving trees with cavities to provide homes to our native raptors. The native owl population is declining and needs our help.

Greg Kedzierski from Ernst Conservation Seed taught us about pollinator habitat and which native species are easiest for us to grow to support the butterflies and bees in the area. One tip: Plant wildflower seeds on top of the dirt. A pollinator plot takes about 2-3 years to mature and will last 5-6 years, longer if mowed and weeded regularly.

Lane Potts from PennVet Wildlife Futures program talked to us about deer chronic wasting disease. This disease is highly persistent and is found in Europe as well as the US. He explained that we should not feed any sick deer, nor remove any dead deer. Instead, contact the Game Commission.

NWPWA held a workshop/woods walk in Springboro PA on June 15. We spent the morning learning about taking inventory of our trees. The day started with an explanation from Mark Lewis of the benefits and process of taking inventory. Then we went into the woods at Andy Kosmach's woodland and staked out a 1/10-acre plot to inventory the trees. We learned when and how to measure them and how to count them and record an inventory. This whole process is intended to lead to timber stand improvement, which might include a timber sale, but may also just indicate a need to thin, or plant more, trees. A very worthwhile morning!

Last Saturday, March 16, 2024, the NWPWA held its quarterly meeting at the Penn-West Edinboro Student Center. About 70 people attended to hear about what to do before selling timber. We heard great presentations by USDA, PA DCNR, Allegheny College, and Generations Forestry. We had a lot of audience questions and comments. Valuable lessons learned - helping to promote healthy, sustainable forests! Thanks to all for joining us!

Learn About Carbon Storage in Woodlands and How Carbon Credits Work

March 18, 2023 from 9am to 12 noon at the Pogue Student Center 405 Scotland Rd, Edinboro, PA 16444.

Experts from Penn State and a couple of carbon storage businesses will present information on how our woodlands store carbon and how we can maintain and improve this storage capacity. We'll also learn about how carbon credits are created. These credits can be sold by woodland owners to businesses to reduce taxes or penalties for polluting the air.

Our keynote speaker is Dr. Melissa Kreye who is the Director of Forest Owner Carbon and Climate Education (FOCCE) from
Pennsylvania State University.

Also presenting will be representatives from the Family Forest Carbon Program (American Forest Foundation), Finite Carbon, and
Natural Capital Exchange (NCX).

There will be plenty of time for Q&A and for individual conversations with the presenters.

NWPWA will provide coffee and donuts.
Everyone interested in the forests, the science of carbon storage, or the rules and requirements behind carbon credits is welcome.
