McKeesport Model Railroad Club

McKeesport Model Railroad Club Established: February 1, 1950
Incorporated: May 14, 1954
A non-profit organization. Home of the 1:87 scale
Mon-Yough Valley Railroad [2200 ft²].
(1)

The Mon-Yough Valley Railroad is a 1:87 [HO] scale manifestation that artistically encapsulates southwestern Pennsylvania life during the 1950's. The current layout is in transition between what was semi-permanently constructed between 1987 and 1991, and an entirely new design that will include slightly less 'main line running', and considerably more operational possibilities. The timetable is dir

ectly affected by size - and level of participation by - the membership, both which have been in a state of flux since the club's inception. The original estimate continues to be our target completion date: November, 2018. The reconstruction began in August 2009. It is suspended for 6-8 weeks per year for various reasons, and is approximately 90% complete regarding new track and wiring, and about 60% complete regarding new scenery; 99% of both will eventually be completely changed. Our continued existence partly depends on public visits during the holiday season, requesting nominal cash donations from our visitors ages 5 and up [5-17...$2; 18+ $4]. Your visit during our Open House helps ensure the future of our club, especially the future of the model railroad itself.

FULL SIZE MODEL RAILROADING The McKeesport Model Railroad Club in conjunction with the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad held a private Photo Charter May 16th, 2026. The VERY LAST outing of former Conemaugh and Black Lick Railroad SW7 111 was temporarily lettered for the McKeesport Club's fictional Union Creek Industrial RR on a short Photo Freight. The locomotive is slated to be repainted into another scheme shortly. This is NOT AI, this is NOT Photoshop, It is the real deal. The 100 Ton hopper car WMSX 834314 permanently lettered for the Club's Mon Yough Valley RR was included in the train. The Club donated funds from this event to WMSR 2-8-0 734 Steam Locomotive. The MMRC would like to send out a BIG THANKS to the Management staff, Crew and Volunteers at the WMSR for making this event possible.

HO Scale models of 100 Ton MYV hopper have been ordered and will be produced by Bowser Manufacturing. No production release date has been set yet.

The Mckeesport Model Railroad Club extends its deepest sympathies to the family of Robert M. Mihalchik. Rob passed away suddenly on Thursday, April 2, 2026 at his home. Rob was a member of the Mckeesport Model Railroad club where he brought not only his many modeling talents but his humor and smile to the other members. Rob will be missed by his fellow modelers and friends.

COMMENT BELOW:
We are considering teaming up with Bowser Manufacturing to make a limited edition run of their newly tooled 100 Ton Hopper.
In 2025 The McKeesport Model Railroad Club in conjunction with The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad created a prototype from our fictional Mon Yough Valley Railroad model. The Full Size “Replica” is owned by WMSR and serves in Maintenance Service and occasionally will appear on photo freights.
We believe it is the only in revenue service car to be lettered for a model railroad.
Once we determine interest, and decide to place an order we will have more specific details on pricing and delivery times.
PLEASE LET US KNOW your thoughts in the comments below...

Scratch built LORAM Rail Grinder makes its way around the Mon Yough Valley.
A Rail Grinder is used to smooth and profile the rail head extending the life of the rail.
One of our members made this model from entirely hand cut styrene and kitbashed parts. Full DCC and Sound including the simulated flashing of the grinding wheels working under the unit.

A much longer video can be found here… at 2:15 in the video shows some scratch building of this unique train.

Having a look across a section of the Mon Yough Valley layout, it’s apparent that our members have built quite a few structures over the years.
Still a lot of scenery work done.
Follow us for updates to our layout coming up in 2026.
