The son of a freed enslaved family from Canada, William Hunton began his Y work in 1888 as the first employed YMCA secretary at a “Colored YMCA” in Norfolk, VA. Hunton worked among the soldiers in the Army camps during the Spanish-American War and in developing Student YMCAs on Black campuses throughout the South. He helped communities meet philanthropist Julius Rosenwald’s challenge grant to build YMCAs for Black communities, and then helped recruit and train the staff and volunteers to lead those associations.

Shout out to Ja’Mariah Williams for making Whitner’s Student of the Month. Ja’Mariah is an outstanding student who’s involved in the Minority Student Union, Cheerleading, and is an all around great human being. Ja’Mariah is the example of Black Girl Magic, exemplified by her attendance, grades, and willingness to put forth her Black Excellence unapologetically. Good job scholar. 🎓

Friendsgiving was a success!! I try to do this every year to provide a fun and safe space for our students to take a break from their academic excellence, enjoy their friends, share recipes, build bridges, and show gratitude towards one another.

The school days get long & sometimes stressful however, there is ALWAYS something to look forward to and be grateful for. Shout out to Louis Reeves, Val Haugebak, Robert Honaker & all the students & parents who supplied food for our scholars to enjoy!! This one’s in the books, until next year!! 🎓📚 🦃

Today we had the pleasure of having Anthony Green as a guest speaker for SWS (School Within School) @ MCHS. Our students did a fantastic job engaging & discussing scenarios as Anthony spoke on the topic of navigating life through the temptation of drug abuse and more importantly Recovery. He gave great advice on processing life lessons and implementing them in your day to day life. Thank you Mr. Green, it was our pleasure having you. Remember to be kind, be thoughtful, and always be the best version of yourself. 🎓
