To Bella, being a Valerie Fund kid means having a second family for life. Diagnosed with cancer at seven years old, she received more than just medical care—she found ongoing support through Camp Happy Times, higher education scholarships, and a community that truly cares. The Valerie Fund Educational Liaison Program was established in 2013 to help children stay connected to their schools during illness and treatment. Our educational liaisons advocate directly for our patients, educating teachers and classmates on how to best support them. They simplify complex school services for parents, facilitate home instruction, and guide families through the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) process to ensure every student’s academic needs are met. This program was renamed in 2020 after the founding educational liaison, Joann Spera, after she lost her own battle to cancer. Families - share your favorite Educational Liaison with us.

Fifty years ago, receiving pediatric cancer care meant traveling out of state—an overwhelming ordeal for families already facing their darkest days. Determined to change that, Sue and Ed Goldstein honored the memory of their daughter, Valerie, by launching The Valerie Fund and opening New Jersey's first pediatric cancer center in 1977.

Today, during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, that founding legacy lives on through eight Valerie Fund Children’s Centers and our new Pediatric Pain and Palliative Care Program. What began as one family's vision now sets the gold standard for pediatric care across New Jersey.

The Valerie Fund is proud to honor Suzann & Ed Goldstein at the 35th Thanksgiving Ball Gala. As founders of The Valerie Fund, Sue & Ed have dedicated their lives to improving the quality of life for children with cancer and blood disorders and their families in memory of their daughter Valerie. The Goldsteins pioneered the concept of treating and healing the whole child and family. Although not yet recognized by the medical community, they intuitively understood that integrating medical and psychosocial services would better help families navigate the painful journey from diagnosis to treatment to follow-up.

Today, their legacy and Valerie Goldstein’s memory live on through eight non-profit Valerie Fund Children’s Centers and a dedicated Pediatric Pain and Palliative Care program, providing care across New Jersey, New York, and metropolitan Philadelphia. These centers provide a "blanket of care" for thousands of children each year, staffed by interdisciplinary teams of social workers, psychologists, educational liaisons, child life specialists, and more.
