Shards of Light

Shards of Light Shards of LIght supports innovative, sustainable and replicable programs that activate communities and individuals.

Grants are recommended through the Isabel P Dunst Philanthropic Fund of The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington. Shards of Light is motivated by the Jewish value of tikkun olam - the obligation to repair the world. We are a part of the movement working to end systemic racism in all its forms. We support innovative, sustainable and replicable programs that activate participants in the movement

for racial equity and justice. We do so by recommending grants that support organizations committed to the work of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) both internally and externally and through our support of capacity building in non-profit organizations and transformational work in progressive Jewish congregational life. Shards of Light also supports projects that improve women’s live, encourages the work of contemporary Jewish artists whose work energizes social justice and assists Reform Jewish communities to act on their Jewish values as they move the work of tikkun olam from the sanctuary and the classroom into the larger world. Shards of Light recommends grants through the Isabel P Dunst Philanthropic Fund (a donor advised fund of The United Jewish Endowment Fund of the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington) that support community organizations and visionary community leaders as they incubate and launch innovative and sustainable new social change projects. Shards of Light does not accept unsolicited grant requests.

DO YOU KNOW A YOUNG PERSON WHO WANTS TO CHANGE THE WORLD?

I am overjoyed to announce the launch of an extraordinary new Moving Traditions program - Kumi: An Anti-Oppression Teen Leadership Experience for Jewish teens nation-wide! The development of this important new program was made possible through a grant from the Shards of Light Foundation through the Isabel P Dunst Philanthropic Fund of the Jewish Community Foundation of Washington, DC.

Kumi is a unique opportunity for Jewish teens (11th and 12th graders) to prepare for bold leadership and activism on college campuses, in social justice spaces, and wherever else their passions take them. Participants of the program will be equipped to interrupt racism, antisemitism, and other manifestations of oppression. Together, they will contribute to the building of more inclusive communities and movements for justice as Jews.
Through their experience in Kumi, participants will be challenged to explore their connection to their own Jewish identity and build the skills to turn their values into action. Among the key issues discussed, teens will be given support to explore how they can talk and think about Israel, when so much of the current discourse is polarized and creates simplified binaries.

You are eligible to apply to Kumi if:
You identify as Jewish. Kumi is open to teens of all (and no) denominations and affiliations.
You are in 11th or 12th grade for the 2022-2023 academic year.
You are concerned about racism and antisemitism and want to join others to make a difference
You want to challenge yourself to learn and grow in a justice-minded Jewish community
You can attend the entire in-person retreat in Chicago, IL on March 23-26, 2023 and are committed to attending monthly virtual sessions through June 2023.

Applications are due by midnight on January 15, 2023.

Applications can be found here:
