Digging our sweet potatoes is always fun! You never know what’s in the ground until you start digging. Some were huge! We were able to harvest 157 pounds!!!

We cure them for 2 weeks, unwashed, which change their starch to sugar which gives them their sweet taste. They will then be distributed to the food insecure in our community. Thank you to our passionate volunteers who have worked very hard this season. 🌻❤️

Not only do we grow veggies to help our community but we also educate our community! In partnership with the NC State Extension Office in Haywood County, we hosted with our Master Gardener volunteers Kim and Kaye a class on Square Foot Gardening. We demonstrated how to prepare a raised garden and discussed the types of veggies that can be grown. It’s amazing how much you can grow and harvest from a small area! Thank you to all the participants who came to learn and visit our gardens! 🌻

We’re already planning next year’s classes. Stay tuned…

Our growing time is winding down and many of our beds are now covered in hay to rest for the winter. A thick layer of hay helps to prevent weeds and will break down gradually to add nutrients to our soil.

We still have our sweet potatoes to harvest and we’re hoping for a nice crop. It’s always a good time when we dig the taters! 🥔

We’re maintaining our fall crop of lettuce, cabbage, brussel sprouts and collards as our fall crop. They’re growing nicely!

All our work goes to helping feed the insecure in our community. We love what we do! 🌻

A BIG thank you to all our garden gang volunteers who have helped this summer with all the tasks required to keep the gardens growing ! ❤️ We’re still harvesting beautiful veggies and we’ve planted our fall starters of lettuce, cabbage, brussel sprouts and collard greens. We’re dedicated to work thru the fall season to help feed the food insecure in our community 🌻

More and more veggies! All the summer rain has been very beneficial to the gardens. We’re harvesting at least twice a week to keep up with the production. Our volunteers are doing an excellent job!

Another great harvest and a new addition to the gardens! Once again, these beautiful veggies were harvested by our hard working garden gang and delivered to help feed the food insecure in our community. The beautiful bench was handmade and donated to the gardens by a talented friend of one of our volunteers. Thank you Ron, it’s beautiful! 🌻

Our total harvest so far this season is over 1,000 pounds!!! Great job Garden Gang!!! We’ve worked hard to help feed the food insecure in our community and we have more work to do. We’re already planning our fall crop so we’ll be busy for a few more months! 🌻

We received a donation of bruised tomatoes and wilted cabbage which we “sliced & diced” and placed in our compost bins. It’s naturally cooking and will become our wonderful rich compost. 🌻

Lots and lots of potatoes - 335 pounds! Plus all the other veggies we harvested! We had fun digging the potatoes, you never know where you’re going to hit a huge batch underground. All the produce was delivered to the food insecure in our community via our partners at Maggie Valley UMC (Shepherd’s Table and food pantry), Friendship House @ Waynesville UMC and Second Season Neighborhood Pantry in Waynesville. Thank you volunteers!!! 🌻

HUGE harvest! 335 pounds of just potatoes! With all the rain we had to harvest the potatoes a little early but it was worth it. Our volunteers had a great time digging them, it’s almost like an Easter Egg hunt! We love to have fun!
