Today we had the honor of being visited by two of Morgan County‘s finest
Sheriff Tyler, Hooks, and Fire Chief Gary Smith .
They led a very informative discussion about emergency, preparedness, safety, and how to protect ourselves from scams
They warned us about common scams that are happening right now for example never trust phone calls claiming you missed jury duty or demanding payment. Banks will never ask for money over the phone and be aware of hackers that may try to request copies of credit or debit card. We are reminded not to trust, suspicious emails either sadly scammers can sometimes even be people pretending to be family members so it is important to verify before sending money or information..
They also discussed personal safety and what to do if you feel threatened best response is run yell make noise to attract attention to get away. Pepper spray can be very helpful tool for personal protection.
Our safety and emergency planning are also important topics . We were encourage to have an escape plan in case of fire and be very careful with space heaters !
If your space heater makes a crackling sound or the wire feels hot unplug immediately.
Also, carbon monoxide alarms are extremely important at every home.
Your fire department also offers help in the community. If you have any expired fire extinguishers, you can bring it to the fire department where they will check them out for you and even teach you how to use it properly . Fire safety blankets are another option for putting out small fires and highly recommended.
Another helpful tip was for everyone to keep a copy of the local non-emergency number readily available.
Morgan counties nonemergency number is 706-342-1200.
If you find yourself in a position where you can’t talk, you can text 911. It will trace where you are.
