As we mourn Gloria Steinem, we’re holding close the way she spoke so openly about the Black women who shaped her understanding of feminism. She recognized that some of the most powerful lessons about liberation, justice, and resistance came from Black women whose leadership and intellectual contributions have too often been overlooked. That recognition mattered. Gloria understood that feminism was never hers alone, it was built, in profound ways, by Black women who challenged the movement to become broader, deeper, and more honest. We are grateful for the ways Gloria listened, learned, amplified, and carried those lessons forward.

Rest in power, Gloria. Your voice and your work will remain part of the movement you helped build.

For years, we've joined choirs, classrooms, congregations, and communities everywhere in the quiet work of keeping a 126-year-old hymn alive and growing. This summer, our part of that work reached further than ever. 🎶

We advance the legacy of a true Renaissance man: lawyer, poet, novelist, lyricist, diplomat, educator, journalist, civil rights pioneer, and activist who wrote "Lift Every Voice and Sing" and a driving force behind the Harlem Renaissance.

This June, 140+ people gathered at our home, Five Acres, nearly double last year 👏 In July, the Du Bois Forum returned to Great Barrington, and we spent a day inside Yale's Beinecke Library uncovering never-before-seen material on Johnson's life.

One of our summer highlights: donor Bruce Bernstein visited Five Acres for the first time in June. By July, he came back with nearly 40 people in tow: his swim team, book club, and friends. In his words: "So few people know this part of the history of Great Barrington, and I'm very glad a few more people will learn about it." 🙌

This hymn has always been bigger than any one of us, sung at marches, an inauguration, and Super Bowl halftimes. This summer it found a new medium: our silk scarf collaboration with Bee Blunt Studio, with part of the proceeds supporting our work.

Next up: a champagne brunch with Bee Blunt on Martha's Vineyard, August 19.

💪🏾 Fatherhood. Family. Community.

What an amazing event to be a part of!

A collaboration between the North Shore Juneteenth Association and Kayak & Sail Lynn brought fathers and their families together for a beautiful day on the water. Facilitated by James McClain, fathers had the opportunity to kayak alongside their children and families, creating memories and simply enjoying time together. 🛶💜

After their time on the water, families gathered for pizza and fellowship, and each father received a copy of Fathom Fatherhood, written by James McClain. The book shares real experiences, lessons, and perspectives on fatherhood and the things fathers learn along the journey.

We talk a lot about the importance of fathers being present and engaged in the lives of their children. Events like this give us an opportunity to not only talk about it, but to celebrate, encourage, and create space for it.
