Summer at Congress Square Plaza has been full. Residents filled the community room for an art class this season — two teachers, dozens of participants, and pizza for everyone care of Healthcare. Bingo night found a new rhythm with the newest caller, ice cream socials drew a crowd, and weekly farm share and government food boxes kept pantries stocked. A public health nurse holds clinic here every week, and residents dressed for worship boarded the van, transportation provided by Your Service. The Congress Square neighborhood does not offer much green space, but our small garden and bird bath held their own all season.

New federal housing legislation is streamlining how affordable homes get built and financed nationwide. Duplicate environmental reviews between federal agencies are being cut, and the federal cap on bank investment in Low-Income Housing Tax Credits is rising. Changes like these shape the landscape every affordable housing developer, including Caleb, builds within.

New Hampshire housing advocates say the legislation will give developers more flexibility and incentives to build affordable units in the state.

Golden summer evenings, the smell of the grill drifting across the lawn, and neighbors catching up over good food. That is exactly what our community partner Arundel Ford made possible this summer, funding barbeques for residents at Timber Ridge, Meadow Creek, and Breary Farm in Sanford, and the Olde Woolen Mill in North Berwick. Sixty new supportive apartments are coming to Bangor. Bangor Housing and Preble Street are partnering on two Home for Good projects, pairing stable housing with round-the-clock social work support for people experiencing chronic homelessness. This work is possible through Maine's Home for Good program, a state investment built to make lasting solutions like this one possible. The Caleb Group celebrates this partnership and the difference it will make for the Bangor community.

Aging well rarely means staying frozen in one house forever; it means staying connected to community, care, and the people who know you. A recent Shelterforce piece explores this shift, from the old idea of aging in place toward a fuller model of aging in community. It is the same thinking behind our Resident Service Coordinators, who pair stable housing with help navigating administrative and bureaucratic challenges, along with the social connection older adults need to thrive where they live.

A year ago, Greenfield Hill Congregational Church funded a grant that covered meal kits for Meadow Creek residents, and something else easy to overlook: sturdy outdoor chairs. Residents move them into the shade, into circles, into conversation, almost every day this summer. Simple furniture, used constantly, changing how neighbors spend their afternoons. Grateful does not begin to cover it.

Corpus Christi Food Pantry & Assistance, Inc. is like so many amazing, community food pantries -- paying attention and changing their hours to best serve the people they are committed to. Thank you.

A quick update on our hours. After trying Saturday hours this spring, we're pausing them and trying something new: starting this month, the pantry will stay open later on the last Thursday of each month, until 4:30 PM.

Requests for food tend to be highest at the end of the month and on Thursday afternoons, so we hope the later hours make it easier for working families to get here.

Our first extended Thursday is July 30th.
