Humans of New York always does a moving, respectful job of sharing stories. This young man was a high school senior with college plans and a band when his mother died. She was a single mom. And just like that, the invisible scaffolding that holds a life together was gone.
He describes it better than any statistic could — how precarious the balance is, how quietly it can collapse, and how most people never see it coming, including themselves.
Every person living in affordable housing arrived there by a different road. This is one of them.

What a terrific day in Madison, CT! We were proud to have our Executive Director, Shawn Smitley, join HOPE Partnership and Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) for a tour of HOPE's properties — a powerful example of community-based affordable housing in action. The Wellington project reflects what is possible when mission-driven partners work together. Grateful for this partnership and the momentum it represents.

PORTLAND, Maine – Community Housing of Maine (CHOM) announced that its Board of Directors has selected Kyra Walker as Executive Director, following her service as Interim Executive Director and prior leadership roles with the organization.

A few weeks ago, Executive Director Shawn Smitley and Director of Operations Colin Loggins represented The Caleb Group at the Housing Partnership Network Insurance Exchange conference in Denver.
Colin joined a panel discussion on unit inspection protocols — sharing perspective earned from overseeing housing across four New England states. The conversations at HPNIx strengthen our practice and connect us to a national network of mission-driven housing organizations.

More than three decades later, The Caleb Group stands as the expression of that quiet, determined conviction. We are honoring Joan this week — a founder, a neighbor, and a remarkable woman whose belief in the dignity of every person shaped everything we do.

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Joan Sawyer, co-founder of The Caleb Group.
Joan helped build this organization from the ground up in 1992 alongside her husband Warren and daughter Debbie. She was a familiar face at resident events, a steady voice in the organization's most important decisions, and the founder of The Caleb Group scholarship program, which has supported nearly 350 current and former residents in pursuing higher education.
Her compassion was personal and immediate. It showed up in quiet, lasting ways — and it continues to shape every home we steward.
We extend our deepest condolences to the entire Sawyer family.

Spring has arrived at Mohawk Forest — and residents are ready to grow.
With ten raised garden beds ready for planting — five returning from last year and five brand new — along with fresh plants and tools in hand, the gardening season is underway. Soil and warmer weather are on the way next week, and so is everything that comes with a season of growing together.
This garden is made possible through the generous support of a grant from Morgan Stanley. We are grateful for partners who invest in the quality of life of our residents.
