I’m just gonna leave this right here.
There have been people that bash ATR because we ask for donations. They say we are funded by the county and the city. That is true. We receive $2000 a month from the Crenshaw County Commission. We receive $500 a month from the City Of Luverne, plus the city covers our power. The town of Rutledge provides our water. Brantley contributes $1200 per year. This is a total of $31200 annually. NONE of our volunteers are paid. They all put in long hours, give up time with their families, and lots of times spend money out of their own pockets. So that is why we ask for donations. It’s easy to criticize when you haven’t walked in our shoes. And who is it that we are serving? The citizens of Crenshaw County. How do we find out about Stray Dogs? From you. Our Director’s phone rings nonstop seven days a week. Included in those calls are Citizens of Crenshaw County wanting to surrender their pets because they’re moving and can’t take them, because they’re having a baby and can’t keep them, because it got too big, and the excuses go on and on. Then there are the Citizens who come upon a stray and do their best to help us until we have room to take the animal. Running a Rescue requires a lot of money. Every dog and cat over the age of four months must be spayed or neutered before they leave our Rescue. Every! Single! One! Call around to several Vet offices and ask them what the charge is for a spay and a neuter. We take in so many dogs annually that we use four different veterinary clinics. In 2025 alone our vet bill totaled over $51,000. (This includes spay/ neuter, heartworm treatment, and treatment for the many animals that come in hurt and abused that need medical care)That does not include the vaccines that we buy and administer, the flea and tick meds that we buy, the heartworm preventative that we buy that is given to every dog in our facility once a month. This does not include dog food and cat food. This does not include cleaning supplies. This does not include gas, insurance and maintenance on both of our vans. We do many fundraisers throughout the year. ATR could not exist without these fundraisers and donations from our loyal followers. So next time you want to badmouth ATR and the fact that we frequently ask for donations for food, supplies and money for vet bills, please try and give us a little grace. We’re all old and tired, but still trying to save the strays in Crenshaw County!
