African Community Center of Lowell

African Community Center of Lowell A safe place for immigrants and refugees to receive a wide variety of support; including English assistance, primary/secondary education, jobs and more.

From working at the previous African Assistance Center of Lowell and the International Institute of New England (IINE Lowell), founder and Executive Director Gordon Halm realized that there was a significant lack of services offered to new refugees to Lowell. Refugees are only supported for a certain period of time, and many immigrants arrive to the country with virtually no assistance whatsoever.

The African Community Center of Lowell (ACCL) was founded in August 2016. New immigrants and refugees will be able to turn to the ACCL for a wide range of support. The ACCL will promote peace and leadership by offering training in conflict resolution and multicultural competency; promote educational achievement by teaching parents to work with the school systems to secure their children’s rights; promote communication through offering language services such as interpretation and written translation; and promote a sense of belonging and pride by hosting cultural celebrations. Launching ACCL has been a community effort. Halm reached out the African Community to shape the vision of the Center. This vision has been turned into a reality by the assistance of the Parker Foundation and the generous support from Community Teamwork Incorporated (CTI), who has partnered with ACCL to provide office and meeting space and to initially serve as the Center’s fiscal agent.

Together, with wonderful support from the community, ACCL hopes to fulfill its vision of helping new immigrants and refugees become responsible citizens and caring, successful leaders for future generations. This success will depend on everyone’s support and participation. In the words of Gordon Halm, “this vision needs all hands on deck.”

Thank you to The Lenny Zakim Fund for your continued work to help non-profits flourish ✨️

At The Lenny Zakim Fund, we have been thinking deeply about what it truly means to stand with our grantee partners in this moment. Through conversations, surveys, and learning efforts over the past year, one sentiment rose to the surface again and again. As one partner described it, “I don’t just feel supported by LZF—I feel held.”

That sense of being “held” is at the heart of our work.

To be held is to know that someone is walking alongside you—not only when things are going well, but when the work is hard, uncertain, and evolving. It means being seen for the full scope of your mission and the realities you face. Our grantee partners have told us that what distinguishes LZF is the depth of our relationships—that we take the time to truly understand their work, their communities, and their long-term vision.

Thank you for standing with The Lenny Zakim Fund and with the grassroots leaders who are shaping a more just and equitable future. We look forward to continuing this work together in 2026.
