This week, the California Fish and Game Commission voted to protect more of our ocean. They approved two brand new marine protected areas- at Point Sal and Mishopshno on the central coast, and voted to expand the MPA at Point Dume near Malibu to encompass the beautiful kelp forest there 🌊🐬🦭

From October 14–16, the California Fish and Game Commission will vote on proposals to expand the state’s Marine Protected Areas. These are underwater parks where fish and wildlife can reproduce, recover, and thrive. Only about 16% of California’s coastal waters are protected today. The new proposals would conserve kelp forests, protect habitat for endangered species, and advance tribally led conservation.

Governor Newsom has committed to protecting 30% of California’s ocean by 2030, and expanding MPAs is the most concrete way to get there. Turtle Island Restoration Network is joining more than 40 organizations in urging the Commission to approve them.

This week is our chance to strength protections for California's oceans. On October 14 - 16 the California Fish and Game Commission will vote, for the first time in fifteen years, whether to strengthen or weaken our state's marine protected area network. Our proposals would help conserve persistent kelp forests, important habitat for endangered species, and allow marine wildlife to recover and thrive.

Vote NO on Proposition 45 this November to protect California's wildlife.

"One of the things that makes California special is the incredible natural beauty of our state and the amazing wildlife that live here," said Laura Deehan, Environment California's State Director in a press conference on October 7th. "Unfortunately, for the past couple of years, our environment has been under attack. Prop 45 is the next step for polluters to remove California’s last environmental review. "

Thank you to the 1 million people who submitted public comments asking the USDA to leave the Roadless Rule in place!

“The Roadless Rule has protected California’s forests for 26 years. The rule was enacted with overwhelming support in 2001 and that support continues today,” said Sam Trezona, Environment California’s Wildlife Campaign Associate. "These are truly special places where elk roam or our fish swim, where our drinking water is filtered and where we connect with nature. They should remain protected.”

Victory!! Environment California celebrated its clean energy wins with coalition partners including The Climate Center, Environmental Working Group, and Solar Rights Alliance, and legislative champs including and Scott Wiener. Thanks to the work with these partners and many others, we were able to get , , and across the finish line to allow more Californians to tap into balcony solar and the millions of clean energy home devices throughout the state!

Did you know? In California, thousands of large animals die in collisions each year and many small animals likely die every day. However, we don't know the true number of wildlife collisions because of reporting gaps, which you can help fill.

Thanks to Governor Gavin Newsom Gavin Newsom for signing into law three common sense clean energy bills today! These bills include and by and by Scott Wiener. SB 913, the Clean Local Power Act authored by Senator Josh Becker, will allow networks of interconnected home energy devices, like home batteries, smart thermostats, and EVs, to contribute to California's energy supply during moments of peak demand—a fantastic solution for keeping fossil gas power plants .

SB 905, the Energy Affordability Act also by Senator Becker, has a provision which will allow California to identify areas in the grid where average load is much lower than peak load, meaning that solar-powered batteries can help shift demand away from peak hours, and we can avoid the need to build expensive new infrastructure and shift away from dirty energy sources faster.

SB 868, the Plug-and-Play Solar Act, will pave the way for balcony solar in the state of California. This will allow millions more Californians to power their lives with the sun by accessing this incredibly popular technology.

We appreciate Governor Newsom's signing of these bills, and will work hard to ensure that the next Governor builds on this progress to help California to continue to shift to the clean energy of the future!
