Have you been to Point Dume in ? 🌊 You might not know that it is one of Southern California’s most vibrant ecosystems, where kelp forests, tidepools, sandy beaches, and surfgrass beds are home to an abundance of marine life.

Our newest article explores the threats currently facing Point Dume, and how stronger Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) will help these ecosystems remain resilient against climate change and human impacts.

Read the full story through the link in our bio.

🙋‍♀️📢 You can help advocate for Point Dume THIS TUESDAY, May 19 in San Clemente (& Zoom) for the FINAL public hearing on proposed Marine Protected Area changes. RSVP at link in bio or tinyurl.com/SanClementeMPA

Do you live anywhere between Los Angeles and San Diego (or on Catalina Island)? This post is for you!

THIS TUESDAY, the California Fish and Game Commission will be reviewing key marine protection petitions that will impact our coastline for years to come. This meeting is our LAST CHANCE to advocate for protecting the coastline we call home.

Swipe to learn more about the petitions under review at this meeting and how YOU can use your voice to make a real difference!

Our next highlights ! 🐚 These large marine snails are critical to the kelp forest ecosystem yet are some of the most over-exploited species in our oceans.

Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are probably the reason these still exist. Yet they’re still struggling to rebound after being pushed to the brink of extinction.

YOU can be an advocate for abalone next Tuesday, May 19th, where a state meeting to discuss the future of MPAs is taking place. Stronger MPAs and kelp protections are the best tools we have to ensure that vulnerable creatures like abalone can survive.

SOCAL: One week from today is the final opportunity for the public to weigh in on the future of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) along the South Coast.

The MPAs currently under review include Point Dume (Malibu), Farnsworth (Catalina), Point Vicente, Laguna Beach, and Cabrillo (San Diego).

Over the past few weeks, we’ve attended multiple public hearings — and one thing has become very clear: the conversation is often dominated by fishing industry voices, while perspectives from science, Indigenous communities, ocean recreation, conservation, diving, and everyday Californians remain underrepresented.

Our ocean belongs to all of us. Healthy marine ecosystems support biodiversity, recreation, coastal economies, climate resilience, and ways of life that make California special.

If the ocean has ever meant something to you — whether through surfing, diving, tidepooling, wildlife, research, photography, or simply knowing these places exist — we hope you’ll join us in San Clemente on Tuesday to speak up for the future of our coast.

An enormous thank you to everyone who showed up—both in person and on Zoom—for this week’s Central Coast Marine Protected Area (MPA) hearing in Goleta. While groups opposing stronger ocean protections turned out in force, scientists, students, local community members, and ocean advocates also showed up powerfully to defend California’s marine life and push for stronger protections.

The stories, expertise, and passion shared during public comment sparked meaningful discussion among the Fish and Game Commission, which will use this input to help decide the future of California’s MPA network.

Now, there is ONE FINAL CHANCE to weigh in.

On May 19 in San Clemente (& Zoom), the Commission will hear final public input on proposals that could strengthen—or weaken—protections in places like Malibu, Catalina Island, and San Diego. We urgently need more voices advocating for stronger protections for our ocean.

Have you heard of The Blob? 🌊

This record-breaking marine heatwave devastated California’s ocean ecosystems, triggering massive kelp loss and harming marine mammals, seabirds, and countless other species. And now, California is facing another marine heatwave that could cause even more damage to our coast.

Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are one of the strongest tools we have to help marine ecosystems recover and build resilience in the face of climate change. That’s why we urgently need more voices speaking up for stronger protections.

Join us at the FINAL MPA hearing on May 19 in San Clemente (or on Zoom) to advocate for stronger protections in Malibu, Laguna Beach, Catalina Island, and San Diego. Industry voices pushing to weaken protections are showing up—we need our communities there too. This is the final chance for public input in this process, and your voice can make a real difference.

TODAY IS DAY 1 OF THE CENTRAL COAST MPA PETITION HEARING!

We’re short on voices to advocate for stronger protections. If you’re a scientist, ocean lover, water sportsperson, or just someone who’s passionate about protecting our planet, we need you today and tomorrow.

Join us in-person at the Hilton Garden Inn in Goleta (6878 Hollister Avenue) or on Zoom (tinyurl.com/GoletaHearingZoom). The hearing will likely last the whole day, and you’re free to join whenever you can and speak on the petitions that are being discussed.

More details at tinyurl.com/GoletaMPAHearing. Feel free to DM us if you have any questions or need help preparing your comment!

TOMORROW AND WEDNESDAY in Goleta (and on Zoom), the California Fish and Game Commission is holding a key public hearing on the future of marine protections along the Central Coast and Channel Islands—part of a once-in-a-decade opportunity to shape the state’s Marine Protected Area (MPA) network.

Swipe through this post to learn about the petitions (proposals) being discussed tomorrow. We invite you to give spoken comments supporting the pro-conservation petitions and opposing the anti-conservation petitions. The Commission hears everyone’s comments as vital inputs in decision-making.

Our ocean is under growing pressure, with up to 90% of kelp forests lost in some regions and threats like overfishing and marine heatwaves on the rise. Meanwhile, industry voices pushing to weaken protections are showing up—so it’s critical that our communities do too. Stand with us, speak out, and be part of the movement to protect our coast. Bring a friend 💙
