This old girl turns 30 this year, and she still shines like no other!

For most people, owning a vehicle that’s 30 years old is pretty uncommon. But in today’s fire service, having apparatus that are 30 years old or older is more common than you might imagine.

For three decades, this engine has been a vital part of the Elderville-Lakeport Fire Department. From serving as a frontline apparatus and responding to countless major incidents to her current role as a reserve engine, she’s been there when we’ve needed her most.

Today, she’s all cleaned up, polished, and ready to go! Tomorrow, she’ll be back to work pumping water for live-fire training evolutions, proving that even at 30 years old, she’s still got plenty left to give.

She continues to pass her required annual testing, remains ready for service, and still looks better than some fire trucks that aren’t even 10 years old!

Pride and ownership. Those are two things that were instilled in us early on by Fire Chief Pat Owens. He taught us that taking care of our equipment wasn’t just about appearances. It was about respecting what we have, being ready when the community needs us, and making things last. This engine is a perfect example of what a little love, hard work, and dedication can accomplish.

She’s certainly seen her share of fires, long nights, and hard days. She’s gone from being on the front lines of nearly every major incident to spending most of her days resting comfortably at the station. But don’t mistake that for retirement! When the call comes and she’s needed, she’s still ready to answer.

Thirty years of service. Thirty years of memories. Thirty years of taking care of the community.

Here’s to hoping this old girl has another 30 years left in her!

They just don’t make them like they used to, and sometimes a little pride and ownership goes a long way!

FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS HOLY… PLEASE STOP BURNING!

Listen, we get it! The weather is beautiful, the cooler temperatures feel amazing, and trust us, we’re just as happy about it as you are!

BUT… TODAY IS NOT THE DAY TO BURN!

Due to the weather conditions associated with the hurricane in the Gulf, we are expecting an unusual combination of HIGH WINDS and LOW HUMIDITY, creating conditions for EXTREME WILDFIRE DANGER!

🚨 FIRE SAFETY FRIDAY: KNOW YOUR SMOKE ALARMS! 🚒🔥

Did you know that not all smoke alarms detect smoke the same way? Choosing the right smoke alarm can make a big difference in protecting your family and giving you time to get out safely in a fire!

🏠 There are 3 things to know about smoke alarms:

🔹 PHOTOELECTRIC SMOKE ALARMS
These alarms use a beam of light to detect smoke particles. They generally respond faster to slow, smoldering fires, such as a fire starting in furniture or bedding.

🔹 IONIZATION SMOKE ALARMS
These alarms use a small amount of radioactive material to detect changes in an electrical current caused by smoke. They generally respond faster to fast-flaming fires.

🔹 SMART SMOKE ALARMS 📱
Want extra peace of mind while you’re away from home? Some smoke alarms connect to your smartphone through an app and can send alerts when smoke or fire is detected. Depending on the model, you may also receive low-battery notifications or alerts when an alarm goes off at home while you’re at work or away on vacation.

🔥 SO, WHICH ONE SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?

✅ Consider alarms that use both photoelectric and ionization technology, or a listed dual-sensor alarm, to help detect different types of fires.

✅ Look for interconnected smoke alarms. When one alarm sounds, the others sound too, helping alert everyone in the home.

✅ Consider a smart smoke alarm or compatible smart smoke detector system that sends notifications to your phone.

✅ Install smoke alarms inside every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of your home, including the basement.

✅ Test your alarms monthly and replace batteries as directed by the manufacturer. Replace the entire alarm according to its manufacturer’s replacement date, commonly around 10 years.

🚒 REMEMBER: The best smoke alarm is one that is properly installed, maintained, and working when you need it. No matter which technology you choose, make sure your family has a fire escape plan and practices it regularly!

❤️ Your local fire department wants you to stay safe. A few minutes spent checking your smoke alarms today could make all the difference tomorrow!

📢 TAKE ACTION TODAY: Check your smoke alarms, test them, and make sure everyone in your home knows two ways out!

FATAL FIRE

At approximately 15:00 hours on October 6, 2026, the Elderville-Lakeport Fire Department responded to a report of a tractor on fire with an individual trapped inside, south of the City of Lakeport in Gregg County.

Upon arrival, crews located a tractor actively on fire and immediately began fire suppression efforts. During the course of the incident, it was determined that the victim had tragically passed away.

The Longview Fire Department Special Operations Team responded to assist with the situation at hand, along with Kilgore Fire & Rescue, which provided mutual aid assistance.

The Gregg County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. No additional information is available at this time.

The Elderville-Lakeport Fire Department extends our deepest and most sincere condolences to the family of the individual who lost their life today. We ask that everyone keep the family in their thoughts during this incredibly difficult time.

Despite the recent rainfall and several surrounding counties lifting their burn bans, conditions can still vary greatly from one area to another. Some locations simply did not receive the same amount of rain that others did.

Please continue to use extreme caution with any outdoor burning. Today’s fire was a good example of just how quickly an unattended burn can get out of control. The fire spread to just under an acre and crossed three separate property lines before being contained.

Rusk County is still under a burn ban.
Gregg county is not under a burn ban.
