When Hurricane Melissa swept through Jamaica, local shopkeepers across the island lost far more than just roofs, windows, and doors, they lost the daily income their families and neighbors rely on.

Corner stores, bakeries, salons and local stands anchor these communities. When disaster strikes, a shuttered business means a neighborhood loses a vital resource, and a family loses its entire livelihood. Rebuilding them isn't just about disaster recovery; it's about restoring stability and hope to the heart of every local community.

Through the Top Shop Challenge, Entrepreneurs Across Borders (EAB) is helping 100 hurricane-affected micro businesses rebuild, reopen and grow.

While it takes $1,350 to sponsor a shopkeeper through the full four-month program leading up to our summit in Montego Bay, big impact doesn't require a single massive funder. According to FEMA, 40% of small businesses never reopen after a natural disaster. Of the ones that manage to unlock their doors, 25% close permanently within a single year.

Why? Because there’s a critical timing mismatch:

- Relief is measured in days.
- Recovery is measured in years.
- Small businesses die in about 6 weeks.

Most small businesses hold roughly three months of operating cash—and many carry less than three weeks. When disaster strikes, relief efforts focus on immediate emergency response, leaving a massive financial gap before long-term recovery aid ever arrives.
