39% of LGBTQ+ young people seriously considered su***de in the past year of the study. Including almost half of transgender & nonbinary young people (46%) and 3 in 10 cisgender young people (30%).

Events like our Pride create a safe space for people, especially young people, to be their authentic selves. Pride cultivates a welcoming environment where individuals can feel seen & supported, reminding guests that you are not alone.

Today is Martha P. Johnson Day! 🩷🏳️‍⚧️

Pride was born following the raid at Stonewall Inn (June 28, 1969) with the first Pride Parade taking place in 1970. Many LGBTQIA+ people were involved in Stonewall, including Martha P. Johnson, a transgender woman of color. 🏳️‍⚧️

Q: Who is Martha P. Johnson?
A: Marsha P. Johnson was one of the most prominent figures of the gay rights movement of the 1960s and 1970s in New York City. Always sporting a smile, Johnson was an important advocate for homeless LGBTQ+ youth, those affected by H.I.V. and AIDS, and gay and transgender rights. There are many competing stories about what Johnson did during the raid on the Stonewall Inn, but it is clear she was on the front lines.

On this day, July 6, 1992, the body of legendary activist Marsha P. Johnson was found in the Hudson River. She was 46.
Heritage of Pride worked with the New York Times to ensure her obituary used her proper pronouns and adapted language that honored who she was. After initial pushback, the descriptor “lady of the evening” was added proudly to her obituary.
