We send our heartfelt condolences to the family of HM Roy Mathison. He was a good friend, a loving husband, a great father, and the best grandfather. You will be missed sir.
A dedicated public servant, Roy devoted over three decades to law enforcement. He served 5 years as a New Jersey State Trooper, followed by 28 years with the Nassau County Police Department, and most recently 12 years as a Harbormaster with the Town of Huntington. His career was marked by integrity, professionalism, and a deep sense of duty to the communities he served.
Beyond his professional service, he gave generously of his time as a soccer and lacrosse referee for 30 years, building lifelong relationships throughout the local sports community.
Roy lived by the words of Jim Valvano, who inspired him deeply: “Never give up, never give up.” That spirit of perseverance and strength guided him throughout his life.
He will be remembered as a man of service, loyalty, and heart. A loving husband, a proud father, and a grandfather who adored his grandchildren beyond measure. His legacy lives on through the family he loved so deeply and the lives he touched throughout his years of service.

Marine Patrol or arctic explorers? Huntington Harbormasters hard at work installing ice eaters at the town marina.
Ice eaters are powered by an electric motor that are designed to take (relatively)warmer water from close to the harbor bottom and cirulate it to the surface. This continuous flow or movement of water helps prevent ice from forming. Hold fast.
