It's time for our autumn edition of "Plant This, Not That" and this time we have eastern wahoo (Euonymus atropurpureus) versus burning bush (Euonymus alatus). True, we are comparing fruit to leaves in these side by side photos, but only because we don't have a great photo of the eastern wahoo's fall color, which can range from bright red to a more subtle orange-red.

The most important distinction is that burning bush is an invasive species native to Asia. It has been planted for many decades in the US and has since spread by seed to woodlands and disturbed sites, competing with native plants and reducing plant diversity. Don't plant burning bush!

Eastern wahoo is native to Nebraska and a member of the bittersweet family. It's a large clumping shrub which can develop into a small tree (up to 25 feet). Eastern wahoo prefers dappled sunlight or light shade and well-drained, fertile soil. Its berries are very attractive to birds and other wildlife -- yet another reason to plant it!

Here's a behind-the-scenes look at the journey of a dwarf chinkapin oak (Quercus prinoides) from seed to sapling. These acorns that we collected recently in southeast Nebraska are now being prepared for sowing and growing. It's a multi-step process, but it's worth the effort to grow native species that have the best chance for surviving and thriving in Nebraska's landscapes. Come along for the ride!

In honor of Indigenous Peoples Day we have some beautiful serviceberry fruit (well, a photo...wish it were the fruit itself!). This is from the Canadian serviceberry, also known as shadblow serviceberry (Amelanchier canadensis), a small understory tree or large, multi-trunked shrub. It offers beautiful white flowers in early spring, lovely orange-red fall color and edible berries in early to mid-summer.

According to Indigenous author Robin Wall Kimmerer: "In Potawatomi, serviceberry is called Bozakmin, which is a superlative: the best of the berries...Imagine a fruit that tastes like a Blueberry crossed with the satisfying heft of an Apple, a touch of rosewater and a minuscule crunch of almond-flavored seeds. They taste like nothing a grocery store has to offer: wild, complex with a chemistry that your body recognizes as the real food it’s been waiting for."

The last day to order tickets for Plants & Pints is Monday (October 12), so if you are planning on joining us for this annual soiree, now's the time to register! We'll have a delicious buffet dinner, an update from PlantNebraska Executive Director Hanna Pinneo and a keynote presentation and book signing with author and landscape designer Benjamin Vogt.

Join us on Tuesday, October 20, 6-9 p.m. at a new venue this year, the beautiful Crete Carrier Riverview Lodge at Mahoney State Park in Ashland. Tickets are $50 for PlantNebraska members; $65 for the general public. Or get your friends together and purchase a table of 8 for $300. All ticket sales support our tree planting, sustainable landscaping and environmental outreach work.
