Kathy was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gerhig's disease) last year. This disease affects the nerve cells that send messages to muscles. These nerve cells quit sending messages, gradually causing the affected individual to lose all motor function. Kathy is very much a family person. She has 4 kids and several grandkids. y, from serving on the school board to other volunteer activities. She works at the local hospital and is so passionate about helping others through tough health and emotional issues. Its been amazing to see her continue to serve despite the progression of the disease. However, there are many experimental treatments, many of which are extremely expensive. This places a huge burden on the Bartek family. They are also putting their youngest son through college here at UNL. Aside from the obvious financial difficulty, you can imagine the pain it is to see a family member, or your own self, degrade physically and be able to do nothing about it. Any help that this family received would be much appreciated in offsetting these treatments. In fact, the entire community would be grateful.
