🎓 THE KELLY A. MCCUE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Each year, the Sons of The American Legion, Department of Massachusetts awards the Kelly A. McCue Memorial Scholarship to a deserving Massachusetts American Legion Softball player.

The scholarship honors the memory of Kelly McCue, a dedicated American Legion Auxiliary member, past president of Cherry Valley Unit 443, and an early supporter of Massachusetts American Legion Softball.

Kelly believed strongly in creating opportunities for young women through the American Legion and was a proud supporter of the Post 443 softball program from the very beginning.

Today, her legacy lives on through this scholarship, recognizing a student-athlete who demonstrates leadership, character, community involvement, and academic achievement.

❤️ Kelly’s commitment to youth, community, and opportunity continues to make a difference today.

Monday’s Memorial Day ceremony may have been moved indoors because of the weather, but the meaning behind the day was still felt throughout the room 🇺🇸

The ceremony included students reading the Declaration of Independence, “In Flanders Fields,” and the Gettysburg Address, helping remind all of us why Memorial Day continues to matter generation after generation.

Thank you to the Leicester Select Board, town officials, veterans, families, and community members who attended, along with Tom Brennan from Cherry Valley Post 443 for leading the ceremony.

Even with the rain, it was great to see so many people come together to honor and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

Sharing some photos from Monday’s ceremony below.

Despite the rainy weather yesterday, the community still gathered on the Leicester Town Common to honor and remember the servicemen and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. 🇺🇸

Memorial Day is more than a long weekend. It’s a time to pause, reflect, and remember those who never made it home.

Thank you to everyone who attended the ceremony and helped continue this important tradition of remembrance in our town, rain and all.

For the past several weeks, we’ve been sharing the stories behind the names on the memorial squares throughout Leicester, Cherry Valley, and Rochdale. Stories of young men who grew up on these streets, attended our schools and churches, worked local jobs, played sports, joined clubs, helped their families, and left home to serve their country.

Today, on Memorial Day, we remember them together.

These are more than names on signs.

They were sons, brothers, classmates, coworkers, neighbors, and friends. Some died on battlefields in France during World War I. Some were lost in World War II across Europe and the Pacific. Others gave their lives in Korea and Vietnam. One never even made it to war, but still died while serving his country.

Each one left behind a family forever changed.

Memorial Day is not a celebration. It is a day of remembrance. A day to pause and reflect on the cost of the freedoms we often take for granted. A day to remember those who never got to come home, grow old, raise families, or live the lives they should have had.

As we gather today with family and friends, may we also take a moment to remember the reason this day exists.

May we never forget these men, their sacrifice, and the price that was paid for our freedom.
