LAKEVIEW COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP RECEIVES STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP FUNDS!!
TRAVEL SOUTHERN OREGON – 26/27 STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP FUND PROGRAM RECIPIENT

Lakeview Community Partnership

($6,500)

The Lakeview Community Partnership “Start of the Dark” project will position downtown Lakeview as the starting and ending point for visitors seeking to experience Lake County’s exceptional dark skies. The project will include professionally produced 15-second and 30-second video spots that will follow the flow of a dark sky visitor experience beginning in downtown Lakeview—checking into accommodations, enjoying local food and coffee, exploring downtown businesses, purchasing supplies and dark sky-related items, and experiencing Lakeview’s architecture and community atmosphere before heading out after dark to view the night sky.

In the 2026/2027 fiscal year, Travel Southern Oregon is pleased to have invested $71,000 in its Strategic Partnership program to provide timely support to partners for high-value destination development or marketing projects, making a positive near-term impact in Southern Oregon as a destination. For the 2026/2027 cycle, investments focused on accessibility projects; niche- and off-season marketing support; visitor-facing outdoor recreation work; dark sky product development; and destination stewardship initiatives that will make Southern Oregon a more welcoming and sustainable destination.

Travel Southern Oregon encourages all regional non-profits, non-governmental organizations, Recognized Tribes, and private businesses located in and serving Southern Oregon to apply.

LCP would like to thank Travel Southern Oregon for the opportunity to create high-value destination marketing with the help of these funds.

Step through the door of the Schminck Memorial Museum and you aren’t just looking at Lake County history—you’re walking into the home where a remarkable collection of it began.

Lula Foster Schminck was born in 1878 to Oregon pioneer parents and grew up in Summer Lake Valley. She married Dalpheus Schminck in 1901, and in 1922, the couple built the Lakeview home that still stands at 128 E Street today.

Dalpheus and Lula began collecting pieces of pioneer life and local history, and in 1936 they opened their first museum display right in their basement. Eventually, the collection spread through much of the house—even as the Schmincks continued to live there.

And that history is what makes visiting the Schminck feel so different.

The bedrooms, furniture, quilts, clothing, dishes, kitchen tools and early appliances make it feel as though you’ve stepped back in time and entered someone’s home. But around every corner, there is another piece of Lake County’s story.

You’ll find a stitching horse used in Lakeview’s first harness shop around 1878, a reflector lantern dating to about 1890, saddles and ranching equipment, historic fi****ms, beautiful clothing and handmade quilts—including a Rose Star quilt Lula made in 1935.

Then there are the things you simply don’t expect: an enormous button collection, a framed piece of art made from human hair, a replica of Lake County’s Round Barn and, downstairs, an antique doll collection that might be worth a warning for anyone who finds old dolls just a little unsettling. 😳

After the Schmincks’ deaths, their home and its contents were left in trust to the Oregon State Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The Oregon DAR assumed its trustee role in 1962, helping preserve a collection that had grown far beyond one family’s belongings to represent many Lake County families.

More than a century after the house was built, that’s still what makes the Schminck Memorial Museum remarkable.

It doesn’t just show you Lake County’s past. For a little while, it feels like you’ve walked right into it.

Thank you to everyone who joined Lakeview Community Partnership on September 21 for our Downtown Community Meeting and the unveiling of the updated Downtown Lakeview Plan.

This plan was built from your voices. Over a series of community meetings beginning this summer, residents shared what they love about Downtown Lakeview, what they want to see strengthened, and their ideas for the future of Downtown. Jeri Vradenburg with Florecer Consulting brought those conversations together into an updated plan designed to move those ideas toward action.

A special thank you to South Central Oregon Economic Development District (SCOEDD) for providing funding that helped make this planning process possible and supporting the work to move Downtown Lakeview forward.

On Monday , we took the next step.

Community members reviewed the plan, placed stars beside the projects and priorities they want to see move forward first, asked questions, shared ideas, and—most importantly—signed up to get involved.

Now the work moves into Oregon Main Street’s Four-Point Approach through Design, Economic Vitality, Promotion and Organization. Our first committee meetings are being scheduled, and volunteers are ready to begin turning the Downtown Plan into real projects and measurable progress.

To everyone who came, talked, listened, shared, prioritized and committed your time: thank you. Your involvement is what turns a plan on paper into action.

And there is plenty of room for more partners at the table! If you weren’t able to attend but want to learn more or get involved, contact a member of the LCP Board.

The plan is here. The priorities are taking shape. And now, it’s time to get to work.

Your ideas. Your voice. Your Downtown.

Our thanks to the Alger Theater and Lakeview Community Partnership for hosting Oregon Origins Project II: Seven Wonders last night! It was wonderful to perform in this historic 1940s venue, and to work with the all-volunteer staff to bring this show to Southern Oregon. Special thanks to Modoc/Paiute culture bearers Earl and David Huitt for sharing stories and songs of their tribes. A memorable night for all!

This event was made possible by an Arts Build Communities grant from the Oregon Arts Commision.

We’ve been hearing from you — and we love it.

As Lakeview Community Partnership continues moving forward with the updated Downtown Plan and Main Street process, we’ve received a lot of great feedback, ideas and questions from people who care about downtown.

One question that has come up in a couple different ways is: Are some of these efforts already happening in Lakeview?

The answer is yes — and that’s a great reason to talk about how we can all work together.

As Lakeview’s accredited Main Street organization, LCP works within the Main Street Approach and its four areas of focus: Economic Vitality, Design, Promotion and Organization. That framework helps us coordinate downtown projects, events, business support, beautification, promotions and long-term revitalization efforts.

And coordination matters.

When similar projects or events are developed separately, it can unintentionally duplicate work and stretch the same pool of volunteers, businesses, sponsors and community resources. Often, a conversation early in the process can turn two separate efforts into one stronger partnership.

So, if you’re an individual, business or organization with an idea for downtown, come talk to us!

There may already be work underway that you can be part of. There may be an opportunity to partner. Or your idea may be exactly what one of our four Main Street committees needs.

This isn’t about having fewer people involved — it’s about bringing more people to the same table.

And there’s a great opportunity to do exactly that.

Join us September 21 for our Community Downtown Meeting at the Alger Annex. Bring your ideas, your questions and your energy. Come find out what’s already underway, where you can get involved, and how we can coordinate our efforts and work together to build an even stronger downtown.

There is a lot of positive energy around downtown Lakeview. Let’s make the most of it — together.

COMMUNITY PARTNER SPOTLIGHT: SCOEDD

Strong communities are built through strong partnerships — and South Central Oregon Economic Development District (SCOEDD), also known as The District, is an important resource for businesses and communities throughout Lake and Klamath Counties.

Here in Lakeview, SCOEDD is helping make the work happening downtown possible. SCOEDD is funding the work to update the Downtown Lakeview planning process, as well as the community engagement efforts supporting this work — investing directly in the future of downtown Lakeview.

Beyond this project, The District connects businesses and communities with valuable resources, funding opportunities, economic development support, planning assistance and tools that help move ideas forward.

What should downtown Lakeview look like in the years ahead? What opportunities should we pursue, and what improvements would make the biggest difference for our community? Your perspective can help shape the plan.

📍 Join us September 21 at 5:00 p.m. for the Downtown Community Meeting.

Whether you own a business, live nearby, work downtown or simply care about Lakeview’s future, we want to hear from you. Come share your ideas, ask questions, learn more about the planning process and help identify the priorities that will guide downtown’s next chapter.

This is your opportunity to be part of the conversation before decisions are made. Bring your vision, your questions and your hopes for downtown Lakeview.

Your ideas can help shape what comes next. Your voice matters. Your downtown needs you.

We’ll see you September 21!

The Lake County Museum

Right here in downtown Lakeview, you’ll find the Lake County Museum—and if you haven’t been through its doors lately, you might be surprised by just how much history is waiting inside.

A guided tour with Museum Director Marie Lee is well worth the visit. Marie is an incredible resource for Lake County history. Her knowledge seems endless, but what stands out even more is the genuine care she has for the artifacts, the people connected to them, and the stories she is preserving. We learned so much.

And there is a LOT to discover.

One of the museum’s remarkable pieces is a Fort Rock sandal, found in Fort Rock Cave. These sandals were woven from sagebrush or juniper bark, and sandals discovered in the cave have been dated to over 7,000 years ago.

You can explore Great Basin rock art and petroglyphs, learning about the circles, loops, grids, curved lines and other designs left on the landscape, as well as exhibits telling the story of Lake County’s sheep, ranching and agricultural heritage.

Another exhibit tells a much more recent and somber story: the Japanese balloon bomb tragedy near Bly during World War II. Six people lost their lives in 1945 after encountering one of the balloon bombs launched from Japan. The museum also shares an extraordinary part of what happened decades later, when Japanese women who, as schoolgirls, had been required to help make the balloons sent paper cranes, dolls and a letter of apology and condolence.

And then there are pieces of Lakeview itself.

See an ornate 1909 cash register from the Baily and Massingill Mercantile, historic photographs and artifacts from the Hotel Lakeview, including a lamp from the hotel’s 1900–1959 era, and so many everyday objects that help tell the stories of the people who lived, worked, ranched and built businesses here.

And these are only a handful of the things waiting inside.

Guided tours are $6 per person, and donations are always welcome.

Contact Marie Lee to arrange a visit, and give yourself some time—there is a lot to see, and even more to learn.

Lake County history is right here. Come take a closer look.
