A huge THANK YOU to Nolan and three classmates from Columbia Falls for their generous donation to Flathead Avalanche!

Last year, as 8th graders (now freshmen in high school), they participated in the RISE Challenge Big Sky and earned 3rd place, securing funding for their project focused on avalanche awareness in the backcountry community.

Using project funds, the team purchased several avalanche shovels and probes — and chose to donate them to Flathead Avalanche to support avalanche education in our community.

Thank you for your generosity, thoughtfulness, and commitment to helping build a safer backcountry community!

Heading into the backcountry? Check recent observations before you go — and if you see something out there, submit an observation through our website or the Avy app. It’s one of the best ways to help keep the community informed and prepared during these variable spring conditions.

Thanks to Jason for sharing this video from last weekend.

Thought we'd share an image from a windshield tour of the Flathead Range and southern Glacier over a week ago. Our forecasters observed a very large natural avalanche on the northeast face of Nyack Mountain, likely occurring around May 10. The slide ran from near the ridgeline and may have been triggered by a cornice fall, releasing on old snow.

Snow still lingers on shaded slopes above ~6,000 feet, especially near the crest of the range, though many slopes are thinning fast and peppered with rocks. We also spotted a few older avalanche crowns and isolated wet loose activity.

Forecasts may be over for the season, but spring avalanche conditions could still exist in the high country. Have fun and stay safe.
