Reading Power serves the children of North Chicago, Waukegan, and Zion, Illinois by providing early literacy interventions in hopes of breaking the cycle, identified by research, of poverty resulting in low literacy.

We’re thrilled to welcome Kelly Q. Anderson—an award-winning writer, artist, and creative facilitator—to this year’s Tutor Kickoff!

Through storytelling, curiosity, and interactive activities, Kelly will invite our tutors to reflect, create, and discover fresh perspectives—all things that can help us approach another year of tutoring with renewed energy and inspiration. 📚💡

This year’s grant cycle was the most competitive in Invest For Kids history, with 149 incredible organizations applying and just 12 selected. We are deeply honored to be among this year’s recipients.

Building strong communities starts with strong partnerships. 💫

This week, Reading Power CEO Lisa Bulzoni and Board Member Keith Wright met with Waukegan Mayor Sam Cunningham and Thomas Maillard, Director of Government Relations, to discuss the importance of early literacy and the impact Reading Power is making in Waukegan.

Through partnerships with four Waukegan schools, Reading Power provides one-to-one literacy tutoring to more than 370 preschool through second grade students each year, with the support of over 100 dedicated volunteer tutors. 📚

Together, our tutors help children build foundational reading skills, grow their confidence, and develop a lifelong love of learning. Every tutoring session is an investment in a child’s future—and in the future of the Waukegan community.

Thank you to Mayor Cunningham and Thomas Maillard for taking the time to learn more about our work and for your commitment to supporting the children and families of Waukegan! ❤️
