Fostering the Promise of Literacy

Reading Power serves the children of North Chicago, Waukegan, and Zion, Illinois by providing early literacy interventions in hopes of breaking the cycle, identified by research, of poverty resulting in low literacy.

We’re excited and proud to share that Reading Power Board Members Maggie Wehmer and Joanie Alley have been featured in JWC Media Sheridan Road Magazine's 2026 Power Women issue!

Maggie joined the Reading Power Board as a lifelong reader and advocate for her community, while Joanie has spent more than two decades with Reading Power as a staff member, tutor, and board member. Together, they bring a deep commitment to our mission and a shared belief in the power of literacy to change lives.

As Joanie says, “Learning to read changes everything, and every child deserves the opportunity to discover their potential.” ✨

We’re so grateful to have advocates like Maggie and Joanie helping us reach more young readers in our community. 📚

During the 2025–2026 school year, Reading Power helped more than 1,060 students build confidence, grow as readers, and unlock their potential. 82% of our students met grade-level expectations and increased an average of five book levels. 🎉

One week to go! 📚

Reading Power tutoring officially begins next week, and we can’t wait for our students to meet their tutors!

This week, our tutors are completing on-site training at their schools to prepare for the year ahead. Last week, students were getting ready to welcome them, too! During their spelling inventory, some students wrote short messages for their tutors to discover during training. ❤️📓✏️

Two weeks ago today, we Played for Literacy! And wow, did we ever. 💙📚

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our sponsors, attendees, volunteers, and advocates, our Sixth Annual Play for Literacy raised a record-breaking amount—a milestone we’re so proud to celebrate.

And the timing couldn’t be more meaningful. As we kick off a new school year with 18 programs across 12 partner schools, we’re reminded that every dollar raised helps bring the power of literacy to more children.

We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who showed up, cheered us on, and continues to believe in the importance of literacy. What a difference it makes when a community comes together with a shared purpose.

In honor of International Literacy Day, we’re celebrating the power of literacy—and inviting you to join us for an important conversation about what it takes to unlock opportunity for every child.

Please join Janice K. Jackson, EdD, Executive Director at The Aspen Institute Education & Society Program, in conversation with Lisa Bulzoni, CEO of Reading Power, for a Fireside Chat on Literacy & Opportunity.

Every child deserves the opportunity to become a confident, capable reader. But making that opportunity a reality requires all of us—schools, communities, philanthropy, and policymakers—working together.

Together, we’ll explore what that collaboration looks like in practice and the meaningful impact it can have for children across Chicago.
