North Chicago Community Partners (NCCP) wears a variety of hats as we walk alongside the public school district of North Chicago. NCCP functions with the realization that public education in under-resourced communities, like North Chicago, truly cannot operate without external supports. Through our ‘community school model,’ we wrap-around our district, our faculty and staff, our students and famil

ies and our physical spaces to bring needed services and supports into our schools and to make education the center of our community. NCCP was founded in 2008 by the Gorter Family Foundation in direct response to the lack of outside support for the academic challenges facing the children of North Chicago. Ultimately, NCCP is determined to move the needle on education in North Chicago to provide greater opportunities for our children and future leaders.

This spring semester, the Family Care Closet (FCC) was lucky enough to have the support of four North Chicago Community High School upperclassmen from Ms. Berger’s class! Every other Wednesday, the students stocked and set up the FCC so it was ready for shoppers the next day, practicing vocational skills needed in the workplace. When the semester ended, they earned certificates celebrating their hard work and a great experience to add to their resumes!

On Saturday, North Chicago Community High School seniors officially graduated at the Genesee Theatre! NCCP had the honor of supporting behind the scenes at the ceremony, and it was incredible to see so many graduates that have been a part of NCCP since they were little. Congratulations, Warhawks - here's to the class of 2026! 🎓

Students in NCCP's Books Alive club at Forrestal Elementary recently visited the North Chicago Public Library for a special reading of “If You Give a Dog a Donut” with children’s librarian Ms. Joan! 📚 After learning about the library’s resources and programs, everyone created their own stories and art inspired by the book. One student had so much fun, they returned the next day for more!

In May, 58 students from Forrestal Elementary visited the Dunn Museum to explore Lake County’s natural history! 🍁 As the After School Enrichment Program students engaged with the museum’s interactive exhibits, they grew their knowledge of local ecosystems and conservation. Thanks to the Baxter International Foundation, every student was able to take part. Thank you and Lake County Forest Preserves for making this exciting adventure a reality!

Last week, 4th and 5th grade members of NCCP’s After School Enrichment Program visited the gorgeous Chicago Botanic Garden! While exploring its stunning landscapes, AJ Katzenmaier students built a deeper appreciation for local ecosystems, sustainability, and environmental stewardship. Thank you to the Baxter International Foundation for making this real-world learning experience possible!

Ice cream, you scream, we all scream for our District 187 faculty! 🍦🍨 This spring, NCCP partnered with AbbVie to create 625 ice cream topping kits as a special gift for Teacher Appreciation Week. In March, volunteers prepared sprinkles, M&Ms, and gummy bears; in April, NCCP employees added chocolate sauce, caramel sauce, and the finishing touches. Thank you, AbbVie for supporting our school district, and a HUGE thank you to our faculty and staff for your hard work!

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week! 📚🍎✏ To celebrate, we hosted special breakfasts for our fabulous District 187 faculty, featuring coffee from Haraz Coffee House, and ice cream kits - complete with delicious toppings - provided by AbbVie. Hardworking teachers and staff are what make our district an amazing place to learn, and we are so thankful for the inspiration and excellence they bring to our community every day!

This year, hundreds of District 187 students have participated in NCCP’s After School Enrichment Program! Throughout the school year, that meant thousands of smiles, lessons learned, and new experiences. From Books Alive and Engineering Club to Artist in Me and World Snack Club, we’ve created so many wonderful memories - and we’re excited to make even more during the final weeks before summer break!

NCCP collaborated with District 187 and their Multilingual Department to host the second annual Día del Niño celebration. At this free event, guests enjoyed crafts, slime-making, games, and more before grabbing dinner and popcorn! Thank you for joining us, and a huge thanks to our volunteers for making it all possible. We hope to see you next year!

Over 65 Evelyn Alexander Elementary students recently visited the Dunn Museum during Project Innovate Club! There, the After School Enrichment Program students explored Lake County’s history and natural environment, deepening their understanding of ecosystems and environmental stewardship. Thank you to the Baxter International Foundation for making this exciting field trip possible - we can’t wait to return in May with Forrestal Elementary School students!
