BSA Swamp Base

BSA Swamp Base Scouting America high adventure paddling treks and experiences in the 1.4 million acre Atchafalaya Swamp of South Louisiana.

CONQUER the country’s most intimidating wilderness—the Louisiana swamps! Swamp Base offers Scouting’s premier high adventure canoe treks through the Atchafalaya Swamp. At 1.4 million acres—an area bigger than the Florida Everglades—the Atchafalaya (pronounced uh-CHA-fuh-LIE-uh) is the nation’s largest swamp. Shrouded in mystery, for the adventurous and the prepared this vast and ever-changing envi

ronment offers challenges to face and wonders to behold. The Atchafalaya is as diverse as it is large. Comprised of three distinct swamp environments—long twisting bayous, iconic cypress-tupelo swamps, and large freshwater lakes—the Atchafalaya’s size and diversity make it “the most dynamic paddling environment in the country.”

In truth, no mere description captures the experience of the swamp. You have to paddle its waters, spot its wildlife, and sleep among its ancient trees in order to truly understand the adventure. Are you prepared for the challenge of Louisiana’s swamps? TREK 1
An all-around Louisiana experience! This trek includes challenging tests of endurance with lessons about the environments, cultures, food, and communities of the swamp and Louisiana.

They completed Day 1 of their high adventure trek training paddle!

The trek guides and program interpreters paddled 19.4 miles from the trailhead to our floating campsites, affectionately referred to as the Turtles. Tonight the staff will eat red beans and rice and sleep under a full moon during their first night in the swamp.

The 2026 Staff Week paddle trek launched this morning!

The staff will paddle the same 5-day/4-night, 61.6-mile trail that all Scouts experience. Along the way, they’ll be practicing their trainings and putting them to use.

Everyone was in great spirits and looking forward to getting on the water. Allons!

Please join us in wishing Happy Birthday to Mr. Keith Simon!!

Mr. Keith is an integral part of our program. A volunteer since day 1, he's made a difference in the experience of every single participant, whether they knew it or not. From building structures, clearing trails, providing tools and equipment, serving on our executive board, and always carrying a smile; his efforts have positively impacted our program and participants.

If you've been on Rougarou Island, just know that Mr. Keith was there first; preparing, cleaning, and servicing our facilities to make sure everyone has a great time!

Thank you Mr. Keith for all of your support and service to our program! Have a great birthday!
