In Barangay Suyangan, General Luna, Surigao del Norte, families are caring for a Community Food Farm while also growing food in their own home gardens. Their harvests may still be growing, but each seed planted and each crop harvested brings them closer to greater food security and self reliance.

What makes this effort special is that the vegetables go directly to people in the community. It is a reminder that when neighbors work together, they can create opportunities that nourish both families and the future.

You can help more farming communities like this thrive.

Last Saturday, GK New Jersey and GK New York's "An Afternoon of Hope" event, reminded us that we are not just building homes. We are building the dream that one day, poverty will no longer have the last word.

Over 250 people walked into a room, some knowing each other, some meeting for the very first time, and yet by the end of the afternoon, it felt like everyone had known each other for years. That is what Gawad Kalinga does. It finds the thread that connects us and pulls it tight.

For the first time, our two chapters came together to raise funds for families in Ormoc, Leyte who are waiting for something most of us have never had to wait for: a home. A safe place to sleep. A foundation to build a life on.

We heard from Danilo, who grew up inside a GK community, became a scholar, and is now studying to become a nurse here in New Jersey. He did not just share a story. He stood before us as living proof that when you give a family a home, you give a child a future. And that child can grow up to become hope for someone else.

Because of everyone who came, who gave, who believed, five homes are already on their way to being built. Fifteen more to go.

We left that afternoon full. Full of gratitude, full of purpose, and more certain than ever that this is what we are here for.

To every person who was part of Afternoon of Hope, you did not just attend an event. You became part of someone else's hope.

Marami pong salamat!

“What if every Filipino American family helped one family rise out of poverty?”

Mayor Arvin Amatorio of Bergenfield, New Jersey, posed this question during our GK New York and New Jersey event, and it is one that continues to stay with us.

For many Filipinos living abroad, the desire to help the Philippines remains strong. We see the challenges our kababayans face, but we also see the incredible potential of families who simply need an opportunity to move forward.

Over the years, Gawad Kalinga has witnessed what can happen when people choose to care. A family gains a safe home. A young person stays in school. A farmer is given the chance to provide for loved ones with dignity. These stories begin because someone decided to help.

Thank you, Mayor Arvin, for sharing a vision that invites all of us to consider the role we can play in creating a better future for the Philippines.

The question is no longer whether a better future for the Philippines is possible. The question is how many of us are willing to help make it possible.

For a family waiting for an opportunity, one person stepping forward can change everything.

One line from Tita Engelyn’s story stayed with us.

After all the challenges she faced as a solo parent, she shared that if the day comes when her family is more blessed, she would gladly give their home to another family in need so they, too, can experience the care and hope she received.

That is a powerful reflection of what bayanihan can inspire.

A home provides safety and stability, but the love, compassion, and sense of belonging found within a community can leave an even greater mark. When people experience genuine care, they often find ways to extend that same care to others.

Thank you, Tita Engelyn, for sharing your story and for reminding us that the kindness we receive can become the kindness we share.

Last May 23, the GK Houston 17th HOPE Ball successfully brought together culture, service, and community in a beautiful celebration of Filipino spirit and solidarity. From the Santacruzan presentations to the stories shared throughout the evening, every part of the gathering reflected the many people who continue to keep the mission alive across generations and across oceans.

Thank you to the entire GK Houston team, event organizers, volunteers, partners, sponsors, and supporters who made this year’s HOPE Ball possible. Your generosity and commitment continue to open opportunities for families and communities in the Philippines through Gawad Kalinga.

Maraming salamat for carrying the spirit of service forward and for making this gathering a reminder that when people come together with love for country and community, hope continues to grow.

There are children in the Philippines going to sleep hungry tonight.
Imagine if thousands would each choose to give even a little.

One dollar becomes one plate.
Many hearts become many meals.
And together, we can become hope.
