Good news! The Friends of the Kickapoo Valley Reserve Annual Photo Contest deadline has been extended to October 25! 🍂

That’s right. Your award-winning masterpiece can stay buried in your camera roll for a few more days. But maybe don’t push your luck. 😉

🍂 The leaves may fall, but the adventures don’t have to end! 🥾

Did you know that hiking is available YEAR-ROUND at the Kickapoo Valley Reserve? That’s right! The trails don’t hibernate, even if some of us would like to. 🐻

A few things to know before you hit the trails:

🥾 Hiking: Open year-round! Every season brings something new to discover.

🚴 Biking & Horseback Riding: Generally May 1 - November 15, weather permitting.

🌧️ Trail Conditions: Some trails close during wet conditions. Muddy boots are one thing. Damaged trails are another!

🎟️ Visitor Permits: Required for trail users ages 16 and older. Available online or at the Visitor Center.

🧡 Be Bright, Be Safe! The reserve is also open to public hunting. During hunting seasons, wear bright colors like blaze orange or blaze pink to help yourself stand out. Fall fashion meets trail safety!

The scenery changes, but the opportunity to explore never goes out of season. 🌿

🪨 A Little Rock History!

Ever admired the towering rock outcroppings along the Kickapoo River? These exposed layers of ancient bedrock offer a glimpse into Wisconsin’s geologic past!

Much of the bedrock in the Kickapoo Valley dates back to the Cambrian and Ordovician periods, hundreds of millions of years ago. They’re looking pretty good for their age, don’t you think? 😉

Over time, erosion helped shape the hills, valleys, and dramatic rock formations we see today.

Next time you’re hiking or paddling through the Kickapoo Valley Reserve, take a moment to appreciate the incredible history written in the rocks!
