Mission of Hope

Mission of Hope Mission of Hope is a Christ-centered ministry serving the people, schools and communities of Southern Appalachia.

Many of the people we assist are caught in the pockets of poverty and as a result have lost all hope for their future. With your help and with God’s love we can help bring new hope to many.

When God is first in our lives, we can trust Him with everything else.

Three years in a row—and he's already looking forward to the next one.

What keeps golfers coming back to the Mission of Hope Golf Classic year after year isn't just the golf. It's knowing they're making a difference for children and families across rural Appalachia.

Every swing, every team, and every sponsor helps support Mission of Hope's work through scholarships, school supplies, food assistance, Christmas outreach, and year-round ministry in communities that often go overlooked.

That's what makes this tournament so special: a great day on the course paired with a mission that changes lives.

What an incredible week of serving at Mission of Hope!

We were blessed to have several amazing volunteer groups join us to help pack hygiene kits and food boxes that will soon be distributed to families across Appalachia. We are especially grateful for our faithful volunteers who are always willing to step in, lend a hand, and serve with such generous hearts.

We were also excited to welcome a group from Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church. Their enthusiasm and willingness to serve made a tremendous impact.

Because of volunteers like these, countless families will receive much-needed food, hygiene items, and encouragement. Thank you to everyone who gave their time this week. Your service is helping us extend hope and meet practical needs in the communities we serve.

Together, we are making a difference—one box, one kit, and one family at a time. ❤️

⛰🌈 For more than 25 years, Mission of Hope has been carried forward by people who chose to serve.

Volunteers. Donors. Church partners. Staff members. Community leaders.

In this clip, Executive Director Emeritus Emmett Thompson shares a powerful analogy that has shaped his view of ministry:

"It's kind of like a four-lap race. The third lap runner has to eventually pass the baton to the fourth lap runner. If the fourth lap runner doesn't take the baton, it falls to the track and the race is over."

For generations, faithful supporters have carried the mission forward--bringing hope, food, school supplies, scholarships, Christmas gifts, and the love of Christ to families across rural Appalachia.

Now it's our turn to keep running.

Thank you to everyone who has carried the baton before us. And thank you to those who continue to take hold of it today. ⛰🌈

New episode of Stories of the Hope is live.

Ziyanna Carr, a Mission of Hope Scholar, shares a powerful story of resilience... stepping into caregiving responsibilities at just 12 years old, growing up in poverty, and still pushing forward toward her dream of becoming a nurse.

Now after completing her freshman year of college, Ziyanna reflects on how struggle, perseverance, and a strong support system helped shape her journey. She also shares how her scholarship experience provided more than financial assistance—it brought mentorship, encouragement, and a community that continues to walk with her through every challenge.

Her story is a reminder that where you start does not define where you’re going—and that college is not just a destination, but the beginning of a much larger journey.

"It makes it all worthwhile."

For years, Harold Underwood has watched golfers, sponsors, volunteers, and community partners come together for one purpose: helping children and families across rural Appalachia.

From longtime players who return year after year to faithful sponsors like Chick-fil-A Knoxville and so many other ministry partners, the Mission of Hope Golf Classic is about more than a day on the course. It's about people coming together to make a lasting impact.

Every team, every sponsor, and every participant helps provide food, school supplies, Christmas gifts, scholarships, and hope to communities that need it most.

⛳ Join us on September 17 for the 23rd Annual Mission of Hope Golf Classic at Willow Creek Golf Club.

Whether you're a returning player or joining us for the first time, we'd love to have you on the course with us.

We were blessed to welcome the youth group from Blacksburg United Methodist Church to our warehouse this week as part of their mission trip!

These students jumped right in, helping pack food boxes that will be distributed to families across Appalachia. Their willingness to serve, work hard, and share God's love through action made a real difference.

Every box packed represents hope for a family facing difficult circumstances, and we are grateful for these young people who chose to spend part of their mission trip serving others.

Thank you, Blacksburg UMC Youth Group, for your servant hearts and for helping us extend hope throughout our region. We pray your mission trip continues to be a meaningful and life-changing experience!

⛰🌈 "It's a big need. A lot of people can't afford it. But this right here will help them out and pull them through."

For many families across rural Appalachia, a box of food is more than a meal—it's relief. It's one less burden to carry. It's the reassurance that someone cares.

Through Mission of Hope's outreach events, hundreds of families receive food, household essentials, clothing, and other critical resources each year. These gatherings aren't just about meeting physical needs; they're about reminding people that they haven't been forgotten.

The need is real. But so is the generosity of people who choose to help.

Because of faithful supporters, volunteers, churches, and partners, families throughout Appalachia are finding hope in difficult seasons—and practical help when they need it most.

Thank you for helping us continue this work and for making moments like these possible. ⛰🌈
