KEF wants to spotlight another teacher grant awarded this past December to our Kingfisher Public School teachers. Mrs. Jannason Long, who teaches 6th grade at Kingfisher Upper Elementary (KUE), wrote a grant requesting resources to teach her students about the Titanic in a new and creative way.
KEF funded the purchase of Titanic materials used to research and write an informational essay. The students used maps, posters, and other materials to create an immersive experience. They were assigned different passengers aboard the ship, learned about Morse code, a 3D tour of the ship via VR headsets that engaged her students in reading and writing about this event along with building a large replica of the Titanic with Legos for a more visual representation of the “unsinkable ship.” Students engaged in small-group and large-group discussions and wrote an essay to enhance literacy skills in an engaging way.
Mrs. Long shared that, “This year, the 6th grade ELA classroom purchased items for the Titanic, and it was a huge success with the students! They were able to view replicas of the newspaper articles and pictures of the Titanic cabins. Students also became Titanic passengers aboard the ship and saw up close a Lego Titanic. The interactive materials brought the unit to life and created excitement with my students. Thank you, KEF, for funding these fun learning materials to help me reach each of my students in a way I couldn’t have without them.”
This is another example made possible by community support and distributed through KEF Teacher Grants. When you buy ducks for our annual DUCK RACE, you’re helping fund creative and impactful opportunities for our teachers and students!
We are currently selling ducks for this year’s race on July 4th at 2pm at the Vernie Snow Aquatic Center. To buy your winning duck(s) for the big race, go to kefduckrace.com and buy your winning duck today! The top three ducks and the last place duck will win a prize of $1000, 500, 300, or $100.
Thank you for allowing us to be part of making learning fun for Kingfisher students!
