Join us this Sunday, October 18th, for the Key Biscayne Mangrove Cleanup at Virginia Key Beach Park - a hands-on adventure through the mangroves, collecting marine debris and helping restore these vital coastal ecosystems.

Mangroves are among South Florida's greatest natural treasures. They provide essential habitat for marine life, protect our shorelines from erosion, and serve as nurseries for countless species.

This Saturday, Crandon Park will become an open-air art studio during Miami Plein Aire’s inaugural Quick Draw Competition at the Biscayne Nature Center. 🌴🎨

What’s a Quick Draw? Registered Artists set up their easels throughout the park and have just two hours to complete a painting from start to finish. Visitors can wander the park, watch the creative process unfold, and see familiar Crandon landscapes take shape on canvas in real time.

When time is up, the finished works head to the Biscayne Nature Center for judging, viewing, and the opportunity to purchase a piece that was painted just hours, or even minutes, earlier.

The Monica Burguera Foundation is offering a FREE State of Florida Boating Safety Course for youth and adults, taught by U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 65 and hosted by the Key Biscayne Yacht Club.

The course is required for boat operators born after January 1, 1988, and recommended for boaters of all ages.

On Key Biscayne, we are surrounded by people for whom service is a passion. 🌴

On September 30th, representatives from nonprofits affiliated with the Key Biscayne Community Foundation gathered at the Key Biscayne Community Center for our Give Miami Day Strategy Luncheon, led by Rumya Sundaram.

This year, 46 KBCF-affiliated nonprofits are participating in Give Miami Day!

Together, we explored ways to share their stories, connect with donors and make the most of their campaigns.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, brought questions and shared ideas. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with the people whose dedication makes so much possible in our community.

At the Bill Baggs Birthday Bash on September 30, Friends of Cape Florida will announce the Bill Baggs Fearless Journalism Award, recognizing South Florida journalists whose investigative reporting and opinion writing address Miami-Dade’s environmental future.

Earlier this week, Key Biscayne Citizen Science kicked off the 2026-27 Key Challenge, bringing local educators together to begin another year of turning our island into a living classroom. 🌿

Led by Rumya Sundaram, KBCF’s Director of Environmental Science, this year’s Key Challenge invites students to explore Movement & Migration in Nature - from birds traveling thousands of miles along ancient migratory routes, to butterflies on the move, seeds finding new places to grow and species making their way through the ecosystems of Key Biscayne.

This year's kickoff offered professional development hours for participating educators starting with a talk by avian conservation expert Steffanie Munguia, with a fascinating look at migratory birds and the remarkable journeys that bring so many species through our own backyard.

The Key Challenge gives students from Pre-K through 12th grade opportunities to explore the natural world through science, art, writing and technology - building knowledge, curiosity and a deeper connection to the environment around them.

We can’t wait to see where this year’s Challenge takes them! 💚

Parenting can be one of life’s greatest joys, and one of its greatest challenges.❤️

With so much advice about how to parent, sometimes what we need most is a chance to quiet the noise, trust ourselves and reconnect with what matters most: being present with our children.

With this in mind, the Creating Connections Community Talk Series invites parents and caregivers to “Present Parenting: Be Present. Stay Connected.”, an opportunity to slow down, regroup and connect through a meaningful conversation with parenting educator Anne Louise “Missy” Carricarte, founder of Present Parenting.

The evening will explore practical ways to help parents show up for the moments that matter, help children feel seen, heard and understood, trust their own parenting decisions, and create more connection in everyday life.

Because our children don’t need us to be perfect. They need us to be present. ❤️

All parents and caregivers are welcome.

What an incredible start to our fifth year of Mangrove Cleanups! 🌿🌊

45 volunteers joined KB Citizen Science at Crandon Park North for the first International Coastal Cleanup event of the season. Together, they removed an astonishing 868 pounds of trash from the mangroves and surrounding habitat along Bear Cut.

As always, there was a prize for the strangest things found during the cleanup, and this year’s collection did not disappoint. We have questions. So many questions. 😂

One discovery may have been more than strange. It appears to resemble an old railroad spike. Could the Gulf Stream have carried a piece of Flagler’s Overseas Railroad north after the devastating 1935 hurricane? We cannot say for certain, but this mysterious find may have a story nearly a century old. 🔎

As a barrier island, Key Biscayne receives debris carried by currents, winds and storms from around the world. Every bucket filled and every piece of debris removed helps protect Biscayne Bay and the wildlife that depends on this vital ecosystem.

KBCF’s Key Biscayne Citizen Scientist Project is deeply grateful to every volunteer who paddled, walked, lifted and worked together to make such an extraordinary impact.

We are also thankful for our enduring partnerships with the Florida Inland Navigation District, FillABag, Miami EcoAdventures, Florida State Parks, Free Plastic, and PADL.

45 volunteers. 868 pounds of trash. One cleaner, healthier Biscayne Bay.🌊💚
