🐾 NITRO IS BACK & ACCEPTING ADOPTION APPLICATIONS! 🐾
Sometimes an adoption doesn’t work out the way everyone hoped, and that’s what happened with our little Nitro. His adoptive family realized they were unable to give him the time and attention he deserved, so they made the difficult decision to return him to Belles Buds Rescue.
And guess who was waiting with open arms?
His foster mom. 🩵
Nitro is back in his familiar foster home, and we have to admit… she’s pretty happy to have this tiny guy back on her lap!
Because if there is one thing you need to know about Nitro, it’s this:
He may only weigh 7 pounds, but nobody has told Nitro that he is a little dog. 😂
This little Rat Terrier/Chihuahua mix has a BIG personality. He lives with dogs much larger than he is, including his foster sister Quinn, who is about TEN TIMES his size. They play beautifully together—and somehow, all the dogs in the house understand that tiny Nitro is the boss. 😂
He LOVES meeting and playing with other dogs and would be very happy with a canine buddy in his forever home.
At our recent adoption event at Cross Creek, we also got to see how much Nitro enjoys children. He happily climbed into their laps and soaked up all the attention they were willing to give him. ❤️
We also learned something important about how Nitro likes to meet new adults.
He can become nervous when someone he doesn’t know reaches down over the top of his head. He may duck away and, if frightened, try to nibble at fingers. We don’t know everything that happened before Nitro was rescued, but something about that motion makes him uncomfortable.
The good news? Nitro tells you exactly what makes him feel safe.
Give him a little space, hold your hand down where he can approach and sniff you first, and let HIM decide when he’s ready. Once he realizes you’re a friend, those head scratches are very welcome—and then you get to meet the affectionate little guy his foster family knows. 🥰
And affectionate might be an understatement.
Nitro is 100% a lap dog. If there’s an available lap, he’s probably going to find it.
And if your lap isn’t quite close enough?
He has another option.
Your shoulder. 😂
Yes, sometimes Nitro crawls right up and perches on his foster mom’s shoulder like a tiny parrot riding around with a pirate. 🏴☠️🐾
A few more things to love about Nitro:
🐾 Approximately 7 pounds
🐾 Rat Terrier/Chihuahua mix
🐾 Dog friendly—even with BIG dogs
🐾 Did wonderfully with children at our adoption event
🐾 Loves playing with toys and hanging out in the yard
🐾 Walks great on a leash
🐾 Loves car rides
🐾 Crate trained, although he’d much rather be with you
🐾 Potty training is going very well and he holds it all night
🐾 Knows sit and come
🐾 Professional lap warmer
🐾 Self-appointed household security system when he hears an unfamiliar sound 😂
And can we talk about those EARS?!
Most of the time they’re standing straight up and taking in everything happening around him. But when Nitro gets relaxed and starts soaking up affection, those big ears fold right back. Add his mostly white coat with adorable tan spots and that little curly tail, and he’s pretty hard to resist.
Nitro’s first forever home wasn’t meant to be.
That’s okay. We’re going to keep looking until we find the one that is. 🩵
This little 7-pound survivor deserves a family who understands his quirks, respects his boundaries, lets him be his silly little self, and has plenty of room on their lap—or apparently their shoulder—for Nitro.
