Neighbors in Blue Hills have been speaking up for years about dangerous speeding on E 51st Street & Park Ave and E 51st Street & Brooklyn Ave — streets that cut through a predominantly Black and Brown community that has faced historic disinvestment and sit right on the city’s High Injury Network.

After BikeWalkKC conducted a traffic speed study confirming frequent speeding more than 5 mph over the limit, Blue Hills residents turned that data into action. They organized a petition, submitted the report, and paired it with a letter of support from BikeWalkKC in their PIAC request for speed bumps.

And it worked — funding was approved for 2026–2027. Safer streets are coming to Blue Hills because neighbors refused to accept unsafe conditions. This is community advocacy at its best.
