GFWC Illinois

GFWC Illinois GFWC Illinois is a philanthropic organization dedicated to community improvement by enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service. of age.

THE GENERAL FEDERATION OF WOMEN'S CLUBS (GFWC)

is one of the world's largest and oldest women's volunteer service organizations. Working locally through thousands of clubs in the United States and globally in more than 20 countries, GFWC members support the arts, preserve natural resources, promote education, encourage healthy lifestyles, stress civic involvement, and work toward world peace and

understanding. Clubs shape their local agendas to suit particular community needs. Each local chapter benefits from membership, service, material, and program support from state and national Federation levels. GFWC headquarters in Washington, DC, a National Historic Landmark, houses the Women's History and Resource Center, a collection of books, periodicals and records devoted to women's history and women in volunteerism. Illinois is proud to have 250 clubs and almost 8000 members of GFWC working hard to improve their communities. Our clubs have three levels of membership: General, Junior, and Juniorette. The Juniorettes are for girls 13-18 yrs. In the past there were age limits on the Juniors, being designed for the young homemakers. However those age restrictions were removed from the clubs years ago. In practice, the Junior clubs often meet at night as a convenience for working women, and the Generals often meet during the day.

Several of our ladies met with a number of our state legislators, including State Representative Nicole La Ha, who has sponsored Bill HB4654, a bill inspired by one of our dedicated members, Mary Lee Howard!

Becky Weber worked with the Representative’s Office, informing them of the bill. Way to go Becky!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

The bill, if passed, would amend the Human Trafficking Resource Center Notice Act and require that the Department of Transportation post a notice as required under the Act in all public restrooms of each roadside rest area.

💙 Advocating for Children - Yesterday, Today, and Always 💙

In the latest GFWC newsletter, our own Director of Junior Clubs, Maria F Uribe, beautifully captures why the GFWC Junior Special Project, Advocates for Children, holds such deep meaning for Illinois Juniors. From our decades-long partnership with the Children’s Research Foundation to our commitment to prevention, education, and action through Our Promise… A Safe Place for Every Child, this work is personal, powerful, and purposeful.

Every hour volunteered and every dollar raised reflects our shared promise to protect and uplift children. We’re proud to turn compassion into action. 💙
