In 1871, a group of students from Fisk University left campus with a bold mission: save their financially struggling school. Many were the children of formerly enslaved people. Some had been born into slavery and lived to see freedom. They carried with them African-American spirituals passed down through generations with songs of faith, perseverance, hope, and freedom. What began as a fundraising tour became something much larger. Those students introduced audiences around the world to these spirituals, and helped preserve an important part of American history. Today, more than 150 years later, the Fisk Jubilee Singers continue that mission, carrying these powerful songs and stories to new generations.
On September 26th, they will bring that extraordinary legacy to the Janesville Performing Arts Center as the featured performers of the Milton House Museum Signature Event 2026.
As the largest annual fundraiser for the Milton House Museum, this special evening helps support our nonprofit museum's mission to preserve and share Wisconsin's Underground Railroad history.
